⇒ Why Adopt An Older Dog?      Some thoughts

PLEASE NOTE:

•  Adoption is different than Final Refuge at Old Dog Haven. An adoption means the dog becomes yours, you have ownership and are responsible for the dog’s care including veterinary expenses. Final Refuge means the dog is under ODH’s care, in an ODH foster home that will care for the dog for the rest of its life; with ODH coordinating and paying for vet care and medications.

•  Most of these dogs are in western Washington State.

This page has two categories of adoptable dogs:

  1. ODH adoptable dogs are already in Old Dog Haven foster homes, and are fit enough to be adopted out permanently (versus Final Refuge, where the dog remains at an ODH Final Refuge Foster Home).
  2. Dogs at shelters, other rescues, or with individual owners are looking for a new home. Most of the adoptable dogs listed on this page are in this category and are not in ODH’s care. The shelter, rescue or owner makes the decision about adoptions. ODH is only making referrals to help these dogs find homes.

ADOPTING ONE OF THESE DOGS:

For dogs in ODH homes:

  • Please complete the ‘Adopters Questionnaire‘ and send to our office so we know your particular interests and situation.
  • Each dog is different and will need a different kind of home.
  • ODH will not transport dogs outside the Western Washington area.  Potential adopters must meet the dog, once adoption application is approved.
  • A minimum tax-deductible donation of $95 is requested, more if you are able. (We have given our dogs very extensive vet care thanks to the generosity of our donors and your contribution will help the next old canine.)

For dogs posted for owners, shelters, or other rescue groups:

  • If posted for another group, please use the contact information provided in the profile.
  • If posted for the owner, please email placement@olddoghaven.org and we’ll put you in touch.

Interested in sponsoring a dog? Please check our Final Refuge (permanent foster) dogs.

If you adopt a dog featured on this page – please feel free to email a photo of your new friend with his or her new family to webmaster@olddoghaven.org for possible use here.

ODH Adoptable Dogs

These wonderful old dogs are in ODH foster homes but would love a permanent home of their own. Old Dog Haven has provided the appropriate medical care, complete testing and vaccinations. These dogs are Certified Well Used senior companions.

If you are interested in a dog in ODH care, please complete the ‘Adopters Questionnaire‘ and send to our office so we know your particular interests and situation.

Gertie 07/25/15

Gertie 07/25/15

Gertie

Gertie came to ODH as a Golden Retriever/Welsh Corgi mix, and she certainly could be! She is 8-10 years old, 30 pounds, a beautiful Golden-type body and pretty tail with Corgi-length legs. She is in good health and has had a dental. Gertie is very quiet and easy-going at home but can keep up on a brisk walk despite those short little legs if you’d like. She can climb steps well and can jump into the car on her own. She comes immediately when called, obeys instructions well, stays in her property boundaries even in the unfenced areas, and doesn’t challenge the neighbor dogs or passers-by. She seems neutral toward cats she’s met but isn’t living with one now. Gertie LOVES to ride in the truck with her foster dad! She has never had an accident in the house and can stay home all workday if need be, though as she ages that will become more difficult. In short, an amazingly well mannered dog who pays close attention to what’s asked of her and is a pleasure to live with.
Gertie has her guard up about strange dogs and people (perhaps from all the moves she’s been through) and is best when she initiates contact – she’s very suspicious of people who come on too strong. She’s a bit afraid of kids so probably best in an adult-only home. She doesn’t do well with overbearing dogs who crowd her space, will guard her food and water from them, but is just aloof to dogs otherwise; she’s comfortable as an only dog though might benefit from a laid-back canine companion. Gertie has been passed around a few times, likely the reason for some of this distrust of strangers. We would like her to find someone who needs her, who will be committed and consistent. She will be the devoted companion you’re always wanted! Gertie is in foster care in Snohomish.

Email Olddoghaven about Gertie.

Nina - day one

Nina – day one

Nina - after one month

Nina – after one month

Nina

Nina is a sweet little (all of 11 pounds) wire-haired miniature dachshund, 8 years old. She just wants to be around her family, either canine or human, and have lots of toys to chew on. Unfortunately, she considers cats (all of whom are much larger than she is) dog toys and will bark and chase them. Nina has been taught that is naughty, so she waits until the humans are in another room before the chase is on. Even getting swiped on the nose has not deterred her! She is at the head of the pack on walks and has more energy than her much younger foster brothers when the walk is over. Like many of this breed, she is a bit of a barker. However, most of it is with her tail going like mad, an attempt to get a human or dog to come give her attention. Nina has been around children as young as 18 months old while in our care and is fine with children who know how to be appropriate with smaller dogs. Nina came to Old Dog Haven with skin issues. However, those have completely cleared up on a careful diet, diligent grooming, and medication that may be needed only seasonally or perhaps longterm. Due to a cataract, she is blind in her right eye, but that does not slow her down in the least and you would never know from her behavior.

This little girl lives for cuddles and belly rubs. She will want to sleep with you at night and be near you when you are around the house. Give her a fleece blanket to burrow under on the bed or couch and she is in heaven. Her new home will need to provide a ramp up to the couch and bed, since she should not jump up or down (those dachshund back issues) and she will do best in a house without stairs. Everywhere she goes, Nina draws attention – “she’s SO CUTE!” – and responds in a friendly manner, even in a crowd of dogs and people. As a wirehaired dapple dachshund, she is quite a rare creature and one who will definitely make you smile. Nina is in foster care in Burien, looking for just the right home.

Email Olddoghaven about Nina.

Chevy 07/26/15

Chevy 07/26/15

Chevy

Meet Classic Chevy! 10-year-old Chevy is a very handsome lovable big guy looking for his perfect forever home. This guy loves everybody! He would like to meet his new canine family member before he goes home so a meet and greet is must. Chevy’s new family should be ready for some goofy Golden Retriever behavior including lots of tail wags and love. He would like his new family to be home a lot because he really likes being around people all the time; hugs and belly rubs are needed daily! He does bark when left alone at home so no apartments for this guy. If you have the time and love to give this sweetheart you should go meet Chevy today.

Chevy is posted for the Everett Animal Shelter, please contact the shelter at 425/257-6000.

LumLum 07/24/15

LumLum 07/24/15

LumLum

LumLum is a wonderful character, an Australian Cattle Dog (blue heeler) 10 years old and a bit, um, well, let’s just say “portly” at the moment. He can best be described as a combination of Alfred Hitchcock, Wilford Brimley, and the Nero Wolfe character… with a little extra dose of cranky curmudgeon every now and then.

LumLum had a geriatric blood panel run shortly after arrival; everything is really good EXCEPT he is very slightly hypothyroid – that can be a major factor in his portliness, and also has an effect on mood, frequently causing irritability. Shelter staff think this may be the main cause of his occasional curmudgeonly moments – he can be all lovey dovey (and he is a MAJOR cuddle muffin), but now and then – usually after he has been receiving lots of loving from two people at once – he will decide to snap at one of the people, almost as if he is defending the attention he is getting from the other person! He has begun his thyroid medication and over the next months hopefully it will eliminate those occasional cranky outbursts entirely. He has never actually bitten anyone (and would be horrified with himself if he ever did), so it’s more like a cross between typical heeler nippiness and his other big skill as a FLYCATCHER. LumLum hasn’t mastered the art of play. One thing that does get him up and dancing around gleefully is the promise of a “treat” – that seems to be his favorite word. He is very good about sitting, and is easy on leash.

Are you an outwardly curmudgeonly but inwardly cream-puffy sort of person? You may be exactly what LumLum is hoping to find! He likes slow walks with interesting smells and a securely fenced yard of his own that he can defend from squirrels and other intruders, would prefer to be the only pet but may be able to share with the right female dog, and NO CATS for LumLum, please! This funny, quirky, smart boy would love to sit on the deck and watch the sunset with you, or share your favorite sports season in front of the TV. Even with his extra weight (he is over 60 pounds right now, and ideally should be more like 45!), he doesn’t seem to have any real issues with arthritis. He should be able to manage a moderate number of stairs and, as his new thyroid meds kick in, he should start taking off some of that extra weight, helping to keep his joints supple longer.

LumLum will do best in an adult home, with someone who is experienced in dog communication and heeler mentality in particular. He is housetrained, and doesn’t even soil his kennel during most of the 12 hour overnight periods. He is patient and non-destructive when left alone, and is overall a pretty easy keeper.
LumLum is posted for the Forget-Me-Not shelter in Republic WA who offer a 30-day money-back trial adoption period. Can’t come to Republic? Don’t let that stop you! They have monthly transports to both the Seattle area and Spokane, delivering adopted pets to their new owners.

Please contact kim@forgetmenotshelter.org or visit LumLum’s listing at http://forgetmenotshelter.org/Dogs/0970LumLum for more information.

Bella 07/24/15

Bella 07/24/15

*ADOPTED*

Bella

8-year-old Bella is a sweet beagle who weighs about 45 pounds. Bella has been wonderful with kids and lived with friendly cats peacefully. She lives with a dog now but will need proper introduction to new dogs as she’s not always so sure about them, it can take her a bit to warm up. Bella is OK to stay alone for a work day; she’s used to having the company of another dog and cat to keep her company. She needs to have a potty break every 8 hours which is actually quite a stretch; it’d be nice for her to have outdoor access if you are away for long. Bella would enjoy getting out for walks more than she currently is. She would greatly appreciate a securely fenced yard to let her beagle nose go exploring or to go out and sit in the sun. Bella is a lover, she soaks up attention given to her. She loves sitting with you and cuddling. Bella is in Kirkland WA, ready for her new family.

Email Olddoghaven about Bella.

Beth 07/18/15

Beth 07/18/15

Beth

Adopt Beth! Beth is a gorgeous, tubby older Hound mix, approximately 9 years old and 78 pounds. Beth is an awesome, sweet dog who loves to nap by your side. She loves getting gentle kisses on her head and is a gentle soul. Poor Beth ended up at the shelter because she was having seizures, but has responded well to an affordable medication and has been seizure-free. Since she is a chubby older lady she prefers short walks and lots of snooze time. Beth’s favorite thing in the world is food, and she will entertain herself for hours with food toys (Kong wobblers are her favorite!). Beth seems to like other dogs. Beth will need a patient, loving owner who will support her through her senior years and medical issues.

Beth is currently at Kitsap Humane Society in Silverdale, Washington. For more info, call 360-692-6977 or email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org.

Pearl 07/18/15

Pearl 07/18/15

Pearl

Pearl is a beautiful white and brindle older Pit bull/Bull Terrier mix. Pearl arrived at the Kitsap shelter with some mammary masses, but they were removed when she got her spay surgery. As an older dog with a history of masses she will need her new home to keep an eye on that area to make sure she stays in good health. Pearl is very sweet and friendly. She seems to love everyone she meets and is low-key and well behaved. Sometimes she doesn’t want to share her treats because they are so delicious, but who can blame her? Pearl would prefer to be an only pet and her ideal home with have no other animals or small kids (they can be scary and pesky!). If you’re looking for a wise, wonderful companion who needs a soft bed and lots of kisses, Pearl is the girl for you!

Pearl is currently at Kitsap Humane Society in Silverdale, Washington. For more info, call 360-692-6977 or email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org.

Sally Mae 07/18/15

Sally Mae 07/18/15

Sally Mae

Hello, I’m Sally Mae and I think you look like a wonderful choice for my forever friend! I’m an older Jack Russell mix with the cutest bat ears you’ve ever seen! I have lived with a large, younger male dog before who let me boss him around. I love to go on walks, play, and spend time curled up with my best friends. If you like to relax on the couch with a good book or a favorite movie, I’ll be right there with you. I am a bit chubby, so could use a bit more walks and a bit less food, but for now, there’s just more of me to love! I have this feeling that we’re kindred spirits, so how about we spend some quality time together to be sure?

Sally Mae is currently at Kitsap Humane Society in Silverdale, Washington. For more info, call 360-692-6977 or email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org.

Simon may be an older dog but he’d love to learn some new tricks’ he is eager to please and loves treats. Simon is great on walks and would love to enjoy the sunset with you. He seems to like other dogs as well, but hasn’t lived with them before. If you’re looking for a big dog to fall in love with, you should meet Simon.

Scotty 07/18/15

Scotty

Adopt Scotty! Scotty is 44 pounds of… scruff! The shelter isn’t exactly sure what breed Scotty is, but this 8 year old muppet sure is cute! Scotty is a super happy dog that loves to go on walks and play. He loves being with people and is eager to please. Scotty’s former owners did say that he doesn’t like to share his toys or food with people so he’s looking for a kid-free home that will let him eat his dinner in peace! Scotty is a super fun dog that is one of a kind – go meet him today.

Waldorf 07/18/15

Waldorf 07/18/15

Waldorf

His little chunk’s name is Waldorf, he is just a wonderful little guy. A chihuahua mix, he weighs in at 17 pounds but is heavier than he should be. Since he loves, loves, loves to go for walks getting back his manly physique should be fairly easy! Waldorf isn’t barky and does great with other small dogs who are not rude or pushy, and is now afraid of cats. He is at least 10 years old with cataracts and mild arthritic changes in his stifles and hips. He is gentle and calm – truly a super nice little dog who needs a home.

Waldorf (#A460955) is posted for Regional Animal Services of King County and is at the Kirkland Petco store’s adoption center, 425/406-8081. You can meet him between 1 and 5:30 p.m.

Bree 07/15/15

Bree 07/15/15

Bree

Meet Bree. Bree is a beautiful, 9-year old Chocolate Lab mix who has a lot of love to give to her people. She’s a very smart dog who loves to do training…and then, she’ll happily lay around with her favorite stuffed squeaky toys. Bree will need an experienced, committed adopter that is willing to do continuing training to be successful. She’s been working with Homeward Pet’s Dog Behavior Team, where she gets daily training sessions to help her overcome her anxiety, focus her attention, and be more at ease with meeting new people. Bree has made tremendous progress, and is a favorite of all of our training team, but will need to continue her training sessions in her new home. She is also on anti-anxiety medication. Bree would do best in a quieter, adult-only household, with someone home most of the time. She does fine with other dogs (though she’s not a big-time player), but would prefer a cat-free home. If you’re willing and able to help a good dog become a great dog, go meet Bree anytime during adoption hours. If you’d like to pursue adoption, the shelter will set up a meeting with the Behavior Team Coordinator to learn more about Bree’s behavior and her current training plan. To help ensure a successful adoption, it will include required personal training sessions with Dr. Sung of All Creatures Behavior Counseling.

Bree is posted for Homeward Pet Adoption Center in Woodinville WA, please contact 425-488-4444 or info@homewardpet.org.

Thelma & Louise 07/15/15

Thelma & Louise 07/15/15

Thelma and Louise

Thelma and Louise are quite the pair. They came to Pasado’s Safe Haven totally and completely in love with each other. They cry if they are separated and are relaxed and happy when they are in each other’s company. These two sweet girls are both seniors at around 12 years old. They have some issues that seniors usually have like bladder control and benign skin growths. They would do very well in a home where they can have people around them most of the day, Louise is especially people-oriented and will go where ever the people are! Thelma is more independent and will roam around and explore. They are both very friendly and do well with other dogs and with cats. They would make fantastic companions and will never fail to make you laugh with their sweet, droopy faces and big personalities.

If you would like to learn more about adopting the wonderful girls, Thelma & Louise, go to PasadoSafeHaven.org/Adopt and fill out an adoption questionnaire, email adoption@pasadosafehaven.org, or call their Adoption Coordinator, at (360) 793-9393 x110.

Maggie 07/12/15

Maggie 07/12/15

Maggie

Hi, my name is Maggie – and people call me a Bagel (Basset/Beagle mix) – aren’t they silly? I’m 10 years old; me and my BFF Cooper, a Basset, are looking for a great home! Our mom and dad had some life changes, and neither one is in a position to keep us anymore… We’re sad about that, but especially if we two dogs have each other, we’ll be OK! I get along great with other dogs – when I go to doggie daycare, I have a lot of fun and I’m even good with puppies! When I was younger, there were cats in my neighborhood. I’ve always been curious about them – but haven’t had the chance to get to know them. I don’t really like being left alone for long periods – but if Cooper is with me that helps. I’m healthy, and for a girl my age, I think it’s awesome that all I have to take is a thyroid pill and a little pill to keep my joints nice and limber! When I get boarded, or go to doggie daycare, I like my crate, it’s very cozy – but at home, I like the whole house as I’m a good girl, and I respect my people’s things… I’m really pretty cool, if I say so myself – maybe you’d be interested in meeting me and my buddy? I live in Poulsbo, Washington.

Taz 07/12/15

Taz

Check out Taz! This 9-year-old border collie mix is a very handsome 66-pound boy who adores squeaky toys! His favorite activity is snuggle time with friends, then playtime with any toy that squeaks. Taz has excellent leash manners and loves to get out and about. He enjoys meeting and greeting other dogs but this is one superstar who prefers to be the only dog in the home.

Bella 07/10/15

Bella 07/10/15

*Adoption Pending*

Bella

9-year-old Bella is a 25-pound Beagle/Boston Terrier mix. Bella is currently living with another dog her size and does fine with him. She does get nervous around new dogs and especially large dogs. She was attacked by a large dog as a youngster so a home without large or dominant dogs and proper introductions to other dogs would be best. Bella has lived with cats and kids, she does well with both as long as they are kind and friendly. She is crate trained and can go a normal work day without needing a potty break. Bella walks well on her Gentle Leader harness, she really loves taking her walks. The beagle in her makes her “follow her nose” so she needs a fenced yard or to be walked on leash only. Bella is a wonderful family dog; she has good energy and she would thrive in an active home. She is friendly and loves cuddling with her people. Bella is waiting in Bothell, Washington for her new family.

Skipper 07/06/15

Skipper 07/06/15

Skipper

I’m Skipper and I love to go for walks and car rides and pretty much anything you want to do! I have a unique look about me — you can just call me a Schnuggie ’cause I’m a mix of Schnauzer and Pug. I am currently living with another dog in my foster home but we aren’t close, and I would LOVE to have all of the attention in my new home. I would rather not be in a home with children as they do make me nervous, you never know when they will pull my curly tail or make funny noises. I’m a pretty independent guy, so I don’t mind spending some quality time by myself when you go off to that job thingy you need to have to put kibble in my bowl. I need a committed home that has a fenced yard for my security — I’ve been known to roam a time or two — and who will accept me for the dog that I am.

Skipper is posted for the Humane Society of Tacoma/Pierce County. For more information about how to adopt me, please contact my foster family at maryalois@comcast.net.

Duke 07/06/15

Duke 07/06/15

Duke

Duke is that wonderful “breed” we love: a black lab mix. He weighs 48 pounds and is about 13 years old. A pleasant old fellow, he is either friendly or “oblivious” to other dogs but has not been observed around cats. He has been wonderful with children age 5 and up.  As one would expect Duke has arthritis; he takes a daily anti-inflammatory for that. For that reason Duke would do best in a home with very few or no stairs at all. His eyesight is reportedly good but his hearing has diminished. Duke is great on a leash, he’s not a dog who needs a lot of exercise but he does like to get out for short walks to sniff. Duke can go up to 6 hours without a potty break but it’d be nice for him to find a home where he can get out whenever he feels the need. He’s an easy going dog who is described as “adorable, very sweet, loving and well behaved”. What a guy! Duke needs a home very soon, he’s currently in Mukilteo, Washington.

Pedro 07/04/15

Pedro 07/04/15

Pedro

Meet Pedro, an 8-year-old chihuahua. This quirky little man has been waiting many months in a shelter for his new forever home – he’s ready to get outta there! Pedro isn’t perfect..but who is? He has a bit of a curve to his spine and a little head tilt but that doesn’t seem to bother him at all. In fact, he’s pretty adorable! He putters along on leash, sleeps nicely in a dog bed and is super cute. Pedro thinks he’s special too – he wants to be your one and only dog. This would make him so happy and we’re betting he will make you happy too! Although he does not do well with other dogs he has ignored cats in the home, so a household with cats should be OK. He’s had a few overnights with volunteers; he seems housetrained and he’s happy to snooze on his little dog bed. Pedro isn’t “old” but he’s a mature gentleman who would like a quieter household with adults only or with respectful kids over the age of 14. He is a quiet gent himself so we expect he’ll slide into home life without much fuss. If you’re looking for a solid little companion dog to keep you company – go meet Pedro!

Toro & Roxie

Toro & Roxie

Toro (Black Male) age 13 and Roxie (Fawn Female) age 14 are about the cutest little grandma and grandpa couple you have ever seen! Yes, they both have their share of pesky senior maladies…arthritis, dry eye, hard of hearing, loss of eyesight etc. but they are still active and very loving! Their favorite activities are following you around the house wherever you go and taking really nice long naps. Roxie is the more independent one and loves hanging out in the backyard and exploring, while Toro just really want to be with his person at all times. They have only lived together a few years but would really like to spend their remaining years together, as they are very fond of each other.

Toro and Roxie are posted for Pacific Pug Rescue and are in a foster home in Portland, Oregon. If you are interested in Toro and Roxie please apply at http://www.pacificpugrescue.org/adoption-process.html or email adoptions@pacificpugrescue.org.

Su Su 06/22/15

SuSu 06/22/15

*ADOPTED*

SuSu

SuSu is an 11 year old girl who still has a puppy’s sense of fun! SuSu i s reported to be a Labrador/Australian Shepherd/Chow mix, but those enormous ears hint that there are other wonderful breeds in her mix. SuSu is housetrained and has very good manners. She moves like a much younger dog, with a rather dainty prancing gait. She was reported to be exhibiting anxiety/nervousness in her previous home, shown by pacing and panting, but she has been quite relaxed and content at the shelter; this indicates she may have just been needing more exercise and a daily routine to help her feel more secure. This girl has the energy and enthusiasm to keep up with an active partner on all sorts of adventures in life. She may even learn to bring the ball back, rather than making you go get it from her so the game can continue! (hee hee) She is a delightful dog whose smile can light up your whole day.

SuSu is posted for the Forget-Me-Not shelter in Republic, Washington who offer a 30-day money-back trial adoption period. Can’t come to Republic? Don’t let that stop you! Trey 06/20/15

Trey

Meet Trey, a charming and spry terrier mix seeking love in his later years. Trey’s foster parents report that he is solidly house-trained and well mannered and he is sleeping quietly each night in his crate. He enjoys going for daily walks and has a jaunty little gait as he travels by your side. He also enjoys giving chase to the occasional squirrel who tries to share his yard. As a senior, Trey has some health issues but he very much enjoys sharing each day with his foster parents and has joyfully earned his place an active member of the family. He does OK with other gentle, well-mannered dogs but he would really prefer to be your one and only. No kitties please, he’s a terrier at heart and will chase. Trey is a wonderful companion dog who is sure to delight you with his cheerful disposition and devotion.

Trey is posted for the Humane Society for Southwest Washington in Vancouver Washington, email tzimmerman@southwesthumane.org for an appointment to meet him as he is in a foster home.

Dory 06/16/15

Dory 06/16/15

Dory

Hi! My name is Dory, kind of like Dora The Explorer, but the Princess version minus The Explorer! OK, OK, let’s just make it Dory the Princess – yes indeed, that is a lot easier for people to understand!

I am a very, very sweet little princess. I like girly things like bows and ribbons! I like my baths and my trips to the beauty parlor! I like to look pretty and smell like the finest perfume! I’m 8 years old, 14 pounds, and a very typical little Shih Tzu. I’m not crazy about exercise, but I will go with you wherever you please! I am not very particular about where I sleep either. I can sleep either in your bed or in my own Princess bed on the floor! I am very, very polite with other dogs and I prefer to not cause a problem anywhere! I tend to overeat if food is left out for me so you will need to make sure that my meals are portion controlled! My foster Mommy tells me that I am so much like her. If you are crazy for little Princess Shih Tzus, please let Furbaby Rescue know right away! I can’t wait to meet you!

Dory is posted for Furbaby Rescue and is in Olympia, Washington. Please email elleny@comcast.net for an application.

Alex 06/02/15

Alexander

Alexander (Alex) came to the Olympic Peninsula Humane shelter almost a year ago, when both his humans died. He’s a handsome neutered black chow who’s around 8 and weighs about 70 pounds. When this good-looking boy first came to the shelter he was withdrawn, naturally. But Alex has changed a lot during his long wait at the shelter. He likes people, has become more outgoing, and really enjoys going on walks with you. Alex lived happily with a female chow for several years, so he may be okay sharing his space with another female dog. He’s also used to living outside, so he may do best in an inside-outside home. For Alex, a chow-experienced adopter would be a plus, because like most chows he can be stubborn at times. Alex has a healthy bark and an expressive face that says “I’ve been in this shelter long enough. I want a home.”

Alex is posted for the Olympia Peninsula Humane Society in Pt. Angeles, 360/457-8206. Staff at the shelter can answer your questions or email justine@ophumanesociety.org.

Dante & Keats 05/29/15

Dante & Keats 05/29/15

Dante and Keats

Italian Greyhound brothers, Dante and Keats, aka The Literary Duo, have been wonderful little fellows in their foster home. Dante is the rough-and-tumble of the two. He’s a stocky boy and chock full of personality, his eyes are bright and happy. He enjoys squeaky tennis balls/stuffies and his tiny Kong. He loves evening playtime so he can pounce on your hand or toss the squeaky ball at you to throw. Dante has a dental and a benign lump taken off his leg; he’s on Zonisamide twice a day for seizures and has not had a seizure since arriving in his foster home.

Keats is the sensitive soul of the two. His eyes are expressive. He has only one remaining tooth but that doesn’t keep this boy from devouring food with gusto or playing with toys. He may not win the tug-of-war, but he gives Dante a good run for his doggie biscuit. Keats is a stealth attacker of toys, happily leaping on stuffies, barking at the squeaky ball.

These little guys get along with the other IG’s in their foster home and love to burrow under blankets. They thrive on human attention, voice and touch, are well socialized and crate-trained. Dante and Keats have been bonded brothers for almost 11 years. It would be best for them that this bond be kept intact and they be adopted together; after all they are The Literary Duo.

Dante & Keats are posted for the Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation and are being fostered in the Spokane area. Washington/Oregon residents who want to begin the process to adopt an IGCA Rescue dog should write to igrfadopt@gmail.com to learn about the IGCA adoption process and receive an application. Out-of-the-area applicants are asked to apply to and work with us through their local IGCA Rep http://www.italiangreyhound.org/pages/500rescue.html#reps.

Sasha 05/30/15

Sasha

Lovely Sasha is 12 years old and looks to be a cocker/beagle mix – AKA a “Bocker”. Sasha weighs about 45 pounds; a little weight loss would more than likely be beneficial for her. She has an interesting history as she survived distemper as a puppy and she came to the United States all the way from Vietnam in 2009. Sasha is described as being “very sweet and ever cheerful, engaging with both people and dogs”. She has a fondness for little dogs and she has only been observed around teenage kids. Sasha’s experience with a cat didn’t go well because the cat didn’t like her. She is deaf, that is presumed to be because of her bout with distemper. Sasha takes an inexpensive daily thyroid medication, common for many senior dogs. She is used to being alone for long hours; the hope is she can find a home where someone is around more often as she ages. As to be expected she is slow on stairs so perhaps a home where there aren’t too many to climb would be kinder as she does have some arthritis. Sasha has some spunk in her and she has been known to raid the garbage can or someone’s purse if it’s left out for her to do so – a trait you’d expect both from a cocker spaniel and a beagle! She does very well on a leash and enjoys getting out for walks and even trips to the dog park. Our experience with this breed mix has only been positive, we think someone will be really lucky to welcome Sasha into their life. Sasha is in Seattle, hoping for her new home soon.

Email Olddoghaven about Sasha.

Aurora 05/06/15

Aurora

Beautiful, sweet Aurora is still looking for her FOREVER home. Aurora is loveable 8 year old pit bull mix, who has sadly been bounced around for a couple of years. She is a little timid at first but very respectful towards other dogs. She doesn’t mind larger dogs that aren’t real active but small dogs annoy her. Aurora does great with cats as well! She is a tad overweight, as you can tell from her picture. She goes up and down the stairs a little slowly but just fine. She is potty trained and great with kids as long as they are polite to her. Aurora deserves to live her final years in the comforts of her very own home!

Aurora is posted for Helping Hands Rescue and is in Clarkston, Washington (close to Lewiston, Idaho). Please email pollybenson@yahoo.com for more information or see www.helpinghandsrescue.com.

Roxy & Mingus 05/03/15

*ADOPTED*

Roxy and Mingus

Roxy and Mingus are 8-year-old American Bulldogs. They were not littermates but have been together since they were puppies. Aren’t they great looking dogs? Roxy is a big girl, tall and 120 pounds. Mingus is smaller at 90 pounds. The pair can stay alone for a workday without needing a potty break. Mingus is described as being “a bit co-dependent”; he prefers not be left alone, especially without Roxy. Roxy is friendly w ith other dogs but Mingus has a history of some aggression; he needs more time and care with introductions to other dogs. If you don’t have any other dogs already, they are a great matched set ready to go! Mingus and Roxy live with a cat whom they do fine with. They’ve not had much interaction with kids but in the brief encounters witnessed, they’ve both been gentle and have given lots of kisses. The pair really enjoy a walk a day and do well walking together when on a halti leader. Mingus is said to be a super sweet, cuddly, loyal dog. Roxy is described as “a gentle giant who is a very obedient sweetheart”. Roxy and Mingus are in Portland, Oregon, and in need of a home as soon as possible.

Hank 04/19/15

Hank

Meet Hank, a wonderful Golden Retriever/Lab mix, 8 years old, full of energy and very sweet. He loves people and especially would like to be an only dog. He does love to play with four-legged friends (unless you are a cat, he will then get very excited and chase). Hank is currently 98 pounds so may be too big for very young children. He is very gentle, loves car rides and going on adventures. He is looking for a home that will love him forever.

Hank is posted for WAG and is fostered in Sequim, Washington. Please email Barb at Sequimgal@gmail.com for an application.

Angel is a 9-year-old pit mix that loves to hang out with her people. She is good with most other dogs, but can be dog-selective so proper introductions are important. She gets along with kids and people and loves to lounge in the sun. She does well in a crate, or just hanging out on the couch. Angel can do stairs and can make it an 8-hour day without needing to potty. Angel is fostered in Vaughn, Washington with meets scheduled in Tacoma.

Lady 04/18/15

Lady

Lady is an 11-year-old pit/shar pei mix. She came into rescue after her owner passed away and is looking for a wonderful home to live out the rest of her days. She is low maintenance, all she needs in life is a good bone and a good nap. She gets along with other dogs and is currently fostered with cats. She would probably do best with older, respectful children. She is crate trained but is currently left loose in the house during the day and doesn’t cause any trouble. Lady can do stairs, she just needs a little extra time, and can go an 8-hour day without needing to potty. Lady is fostered in Tacoma, Washington.

Pearl – showing off her smile!

Pearl

Pearl is approximately 10 years old, just a great overall sweet gal. Pearl loves, loves, loves to play fetch. She also has good manners; she knows sit, shake, and sit pretty with hand signals, and walks well on a leash. Pearl does need a secure confinement and no other female dogs in the household. As common with dogs of her age, she has multiple lipomas, or fatty lumps, which are benign. Pearl would love to be your best friend, go on walks and play together. She is a loving girl that just wants to be loved back. If you think Pearl is the right addition to your family, please visit the shelter to meet her!

Duchess 04/16/15

Duchess

Duchess is a beautiful white German Shepherd. She is 10 years old and she weighs 83 pounds. Duchess has been through heartache and a lot of change in the past few months. Since coming into rescue however she has thrived and she is now ready for a committed forever family. Her foster family say that Duchess is both “strong and smart, eager to please and thrives on routine”. Duchess needs a home with no other dogs or cats. She would, however, love a home with children who will be kind and appreciate her, as she loves kids. Duchess needs a home without stairs and one with a fenced yard where she is not left alone for hours at a time. Duchess had a very traumatic experience in a crate so she does not like them but she does love belly rubs and carrots! It is hoped that with time and patience, Duchess will feel more secure and she will be able to manage being left alone. She is described as being “a wonderful dog who is loving and loyal”.

Duchess is posted for Rebecca’s Rainbow, and is in Auburn, Washington. Contact michelehayward@rebeccasrainbow.org for more information.

Gertrude is good around other dogs and cats and is potty trained, very loving and affectionate. Buddy is a 13-year-old terrier(?) mix and weighs 30 pounds. He is up to date on all shots with full vet records. Buddy is good around other dogs and cats and is potty trained, loves going for rides in the car and is good on a leash. He is very loving and easy going. Buddy will need his teeth cleaned at some point. Buddy and Gertrude are looking for a quiet household with owners who aren’t gone for long periods of time.

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie 03/18/15

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie are 8-year-old littermates who are said to be a mix of Lab/German Shepherd/Boxer. Whatever their mix is, it is unique and very striking! Casey is a big boy, weighing in at 92 pounds. Carrie is 67 pounds. Carrie and Casey have lived with other dogs and are reportedly appropriately social when meeting new dogs. They have not ever lived with or been observed around cats. The pair have always spent their days outside but have been brought in at night to sleep with their family’s children or in the family home. Ideally they will be able to be inside during the day if they so desire in their new home. Both dogs can do stairs and since they are what we consider to be “young seniors” they would more than likely enjoy getting out for walks and exercise on a regular basis. Carrie has been known to jump a 4 foot fence so a taller fence is a must for her safety. Casey is said to be a very happy dog who is always delighted to see people and is described as “a goofball”. Carrie is described as “very smart and quiet”; she loves receiving attention. The hope is that Carrie and Casey can remain together as they have always been. They are currently in Snohomish, ready for their forever home.

Gracie 12/26/14

Gracie 12/26/14

Gracie

Gracie is an almost 9 year old chihuahua. She weighs 13 pounds (needs to lose a couple more…) and she was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Gracie is a goofy little sweetheart of a dog! She LOVES to be scratched and petted, but she does NOT enjoy sitting on your lap. Gracie is mostly house trained and used to sleeping in a crate with a pee pad at night. She walks very well on a leash when she is leashed up — though she rarely needs a leash when taken outside. Gracie does not really enjoy other dogs or cats, but she tolerates them very well as long as they don’t try to mess with her too much. Gracie would likely do well with older kids that are respectful of dogs and let them have their space.

Gracie is on twice a day insulin which requires a small injection. With a little distraction, the injection is easily done and she can continue her busy day of napping, rolling around in her bed, and waiting for the treat bag to crinkle so she can beg for treats! Gracie is a really great little dog who deserves her own people to dote on her, sing her songs about how cute she is, and scratch her little butt multiple times a day!

KD 11/06/14

KD

KD is a very affectionate, polite old soul, about 11 years. She is eager to greet you and be by your side and she is very loyal to those she likes. KD is an independent girl who would love a calm home without other dogs or children. She does not make friends with other pets, so she would do best with just your love. She does know some commands and she is well behaved in the presence of her human. KD is content with a comfy bed to herself, so she can rest up for outings. She loves long walks!! She walks well on lead and is happy with any outing, car rides included. KD is also presumed housebroken. She does have some minor medical issues including mild arthritis which does not seem to bother her. She also has a mass in her mouth which needs monitoring. She has been at the shelter since August and is getting very stressed in the kennels. This sweet girl needs a calm and comfy forever home.

Butkus & Abby 03/28/14

Butkus & Abby 03/28/14

Butkus and Abby

Butkus (Buck) and Abby are a wonderful pair of senior Boxers who are completely bonded to each other. Abby is most definitely in charge and Buck happily let’s her run the show. He is such a laid-back type of guy he routinely lets her sit right down on top of him! At 11 years old Buck runs and plays like a puppy and boy can he jump! He has a few creaky joints, but is otherwise in perfect health. The vet thinks it’s possible he has a little bit of Lab mixed in with all his Boxer goodness, which would explain his long legs and could give him some additional longevity. He is a big boy at 90 pounds, but he plays with the very young puppy in his foster home so very gently. He lets that little rascal climb all over him, bite his tail and even try to ride him like a pony, and Buck just gives a small sigh as if to say, “look what I have to put up with!”

Abby is a very young 9 years old with a super sweet temperament. She just wants to be loved on and will wiggle her way into the middle of anyone else getting some attention. She can hear petting going on two rooms away! She does love to be outside and exploring but her favorite thing to do is nap next to her people and Buck.

They absolutely LOVE going in the car! They will race for the door when the magic words “let’s go” are said. They can stay alone in the car with no issues other than a possible move into the front for a better view. Abby and Buck also love walks, but Buck is a major puller. Abby does beautifully on leash and so does Buck when in the right equipment. Neither Buck nor Abby show any kind of aggression about anything. They get along with all sizes of other dogs with proper introductions; however, they would do best in a home without cats. They are superb with children, no jumping up or pushing over. They can be left alone in the home without getting into anything, so crating is not necessary as long as they have each other. They will bark an alert if they hear someone at the door and will head to the fence line when the neighbor’s dog barks, but both stop barking almost immediately. These two amazing dogs would be perfect companions for any family and will most certainly bring such joy and loving that you will just not believe! Abby and Buck are being fostered in Kingston, Washington. This pair is posted for Northwest Boxer Rescue.

Twinkie

Twinkie

Twinkie

I’m Twinkie, a Chihuahua of about 9 years. When I arrived into rescue it was quickly learned that I was easy to care for but that I needed to be monitored so I didn’t have too many treats and get too “round” which is a nice way of saying “fat”. *sigh* Oh, the problems we women have in our middle years and battling weight gain. I learned that car rides and walks were pretty neat things to do so that’s been great exercise. I also have nice ways of letting you know that I need to go out and do my business. Then, I needed to have a bladder stone removed and now I’m a new dog! Not only that, people were awesome and sent in contributions for my vet bill which was close to $1,500. Thank you for believing I was worth it!

I should mention that I probably would do best being the only dog in the house and should avoid small kids. If you want the rest of my resume, please contact my foster mom who can answer any other questions you may have.

ODH has not met this dog; we urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.
