⇒ Why Adopt An Older Dog?      Some thoughts

PLEASE NOTE:

•  Adoption is different than Final Refuge at Old Dog Haven. An adoption means the dog becomes yours, you have ownership and are responsible for the dog’s care including veterinary expenses. Final Refuge means the dog is under ODH’s care, in an ODH foster home that will care for the dog for the rest of its life; with ODH coordinating and paying for vet care and medications.

•  Most of these dogs are in western Washington State.

This page has two categories of adoptable dogs:

  1. ODH adoptable dogs are already in Old Dog Haven foster homes, and are fit enough to be adopted out permanently (versus Final Refuge, where the dog remains at an ODH Final Refuge Foster Home).
  2. Dogs at shelters, other rescues, or with individual owners are looking for a new home. Most of the adoptable dogs listed on this page are in this category and are not in ODH’s care. The shelter, rescue or owner makes the decision about adoptions. ODH is only making referrals to help these dogs find homes.

ADOPTING ONE OF THESE DOGS:

For dogs in ODH homes:

  • Please complete the ‘Adopters Questionnaire‘ and send to our office so we know your particular interests and situation.
  • Each dog is different and will need a different kind of home.
  • ODH will not transport dogs outside the Western Washington area.  Potential adopters must meet the dog, once adoption application is approved.
  • A minimum tax-deductible donation of $95 is requested, more if you are able. (We have given our dogs very extensive vet care thanks to the generosity of our donors and your contribution will help the next old canine.)

For dogs posted for owners, shelters, or other rescue groups:

  • If posted for another group, please use the contact information provided in the profile.
  • If posted for the owner, please email placement@olddoghaven.org and we’ll put you in touch.

Interested in sponsoring a dog? Please check our Final Refuge (permanent foster) dogs.

If you adopt a dog featured on this page – please feel free to email a photo of your new friend with his or her new family to webmaster@olddoghaven.org for possible use here.

Jerry 05/22/15

Jerry 05/22/15

Jerry

This handsome dude’s name is Jerry, he is estimated to be 9-10 years old. Jerry arrived at a local shelter as a “stray” so not much is known about his past. Our best guess at his breed mix is probably Schnauzer with some kind of terrier. Whatever breed blend he is, we think he is really very cute and he is truly a VERY nice dog. He was intact, he had terrible teeth and his hair and skin showed obvious signs of neglect when he was found. Our friends at the shelter gave him a bath, cut some of the mats out of his hair and gave him his name. Because he was not considered adoptable at the shelter, Old Dog Haven was asked if we could find a foster home for him.

Jerry went to a foster home with many other old dogs. He has been absolutely wonderful with everyone, including the 5 pound Yorkie who attempted to stalk and hump him! Jerry was neutered, he had a dental and he’s been professionally groomed. He was a little on the plump side when he came into our care but he is now a lean 15 pounds. He is a GREAT walker; he really loves his walks and he has nice leash manners. He should go to a home where he gets to go out every day for a long walk or at least a couple of shorter walks a few times a day. With medicated bathing and a good diet his hair is coming in and he has become less itchy and greasy. He has never been observed around cats – except for feral cats whom he will chase. A home with respectful kids age 8 and over would more than likely suit Jerry. Jerry loves to sit outside in the grass on nice days for hours so a home with a fenced yard would be best for him. He has a fun but loud “Wookie” type howl (think Star Wars’ Chewbaccah) when he gets excited. Because of that, apartment living or a home where neighbors are close is not a good situation for him. He is not a chronic barker, he just uses his voice for his happy times. Jerry’s fosters both work from home so he is not been left alone too often for very long; he would probably do just fine as long as he was able to get out for potty breaks. Jerry would more than likely appreciate at least one other friendly canine companion to have for company. Upon your return home, he will greet you like a movie star! Jerry can most certainly do stairs and he does a great, happy prance at full speed through the yard. Someone will be incredibly lucky to add Jerry to their family. Jerry is in an Old Dog Haven foster home in Redmond, Washington.

Email Olddoghaven about Jerry.

Ms. Morgan 05/08/15

Ms. Morgan 05/08/15

Ms. Morgan

Ms. Morgan, who is probably a bichon frise/poodle mix, is about 20 pounds and 12 years old. She is a wonderful sweet girl who loves to be petted and talked to. Morgan would be happiest with someone around a good deal and probably would prefer to be an only dog, but she is used to staying with the other dogs all workday and gets along with calm dogs especially if submissive – not so much with the active young ones. She likes to be the Top Dog and will vigilantly protect your home when strangers appear. She crates well, walks great but slowly on leash, knows some commands, is used to a dogdoor and will use potty pads as well. No doubt a spoiled Princess in her previous life, Morgan is looking for a loving but firm person who understands Princesses – and a big fluffy pillow. She is fostered in Renton.

Lightnin Hopkins 05/08/15

Lightnin’ Hopkins 05/08/15

Lightnin’ Hopkins

Though Lightnin’ Hopkins plies his craft in the Pacific Northwest now, his soul is from deep within the Mississippi delta. This bluesman was singing a tale of woe on the mean streets of Everett without a place to lay his weary head or keep his guitar. Through a turn of good fortune he made to the shelter and then into an Old Dog Haven foster home. Now he’s only singing them deep blues when he gets left at home. Lightnin’ got right with the doc and has had his senior vet care, including a dental, and is looking for his Forever Home. Lightnin’ Hopkins is an irresistible charmer with his underbite and perpetually exposed tongue, but this bluesman has seen some hard times and requires a fairly high level of care. He’s hopeful his Forever Family will have some pug or special-needs experience. Lightnin’ Hopkins has a history of crystals and bladder infections, so he will need to be on prescription food and have periodic monitoring. He has a chronic cough from tracheal collapse that can be helped with cough meds as needed. And the usual pug stuff applies: he’ll need his nose crease cleaned out and his ears flushed, and he is not a fan of talon trims (it’s a 2 person job). Finally, he asked his Foster Mom not to share this last embarrassing bit, but she told him honesty is the best policy: Lightnin’ also likes to mark/tinkle in the house. He wears a belly band whenever he’s inside and wants his potential people to know that’s probably not going to change.

In return for helping this old bluesman with all this, his Forever Family will get to enjoy his adorable face and his penchant for snuggling and sleeping under the covers (or even on your head!) and his kisses. This bluesman has walked a lot of miles on the backroads but he’s still game for a short walk and adventure in cooler weather and when his feet can’t carry him anyfurther he likes to ride in a stroller.

Lightnin’ Hopkins is actually only 9-10 years old so he plans to keep singing his songs for years to come and wants to share them with the right family. He’s great with people, respectful kids, other dogs, and cats. Please fill out an adopters questionnaire if you’d be interested in helping this sweet old bluesman out. He’s currently in Burien.

Email Olddoghaven about Lightnin’ Hopkins.

I won’t mind sharing you with other friendly dogs or with dog-savvy cats, and I’m even OK sharing you with children over the age of 10, as long as they’re gentle and respectful. Dallas 04/17/15

Dallas 05/24/15

Dallas

Meet Dallas. He’s an adorable 9-year-old, 7 ½-pound Chihuahua mix from California. Although Dallas was blessed with some pretty big ears, he was born with a small liver and small vessels in his liver. It’s worked fine for him over the years, and the vet says that his liver could get worse with time and Dallas may need to go on a special diet or it could stay the same forever. Right now, all systems are go!!! Dallas is such a sweet little guy. He does well with other respectful, low-energy dogs and would probably do fine with cats and gentle children over 10 years of age. Oh, by the way, who among us doesn’t have his/her own little quirks? Well, Dallas would like you to know that he doesn’t like eating from a bowl – he prefers a plate! The shelter welcomes you to meet little sunny Dallas!

Dallas is posted for the Auburn Valley Humane Society at (253) 249-7849 or email at info@auburnvalleyhs.org.

Raven 05/23/15

Raven 05/23/15

Raven

Adopt Raven! Raven is an absolutely adorable 8-year-old black Pomeranian. This little girl looks just like a teddy bear! Raven is super sweet and loving as can be. She loves to hang out on her pillowy bed, but also enjoys trotting around the neighborhood on walks. She is so cute, you’ll have trouble not cuddling her all day! She seems to like other dogs, too.

Raven is available for adoption at Kitsap Humane Society (www.kitsap-humane.org) in Silverdale, Washington. Email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org or call 360-692-6977 for more info.

Jack 05/22/15

Jack 05/22/15

Jack

Meet Jack! Jack is 12 years old and weighs 15 pounds. He is such a dignified gentleman. Jack looks like he’s a Schipperke (possibly mixed with Terrier). Everyone who meets him loves him. He is gentle, easy going, joyful, kindly, loyal, and so grateful for anything he gets. He’s a spectacular car traveler on top of that. He doesn’t bark which seems remarkable. Jack lived with his human and another dog. When his human was put into a facility, there was no one to come for the dogs so somehow they managed to survive the winter alone on the farm for many months.
Jack had a severe injury when he went to rescue and that took quite awhile to clear up, but you would never know he had ever suffered any hardship. To our knowledge he has never nipped or tried to bite anyone but he does show interest in cats, though politely stands without tugging at the end of his lead when he sees a cat.

Jack is positively turn key. He has been xrayed and ultrasounded, had a complete dental, had extensive bloodwork and a lot of diagnostics done to determine why he softly sneezes. (Answer: we have no idea. Perhaps he is allergic to something in the air?)

His foster family would love to introduce him to potential adopters, they absolutely adore this little fellow and are so grateful for the kind Samaritan who rescued him.

Jack is posted for Rebecca’s Rainbow, he is fostered in Kirkland, Washington. Contact michelehayward@rebeccasrainbow.org for more information.

Meep 05/22/15

Meep 05/22/15

Meep

Meep is an absolutely adorable little senior Chihuahua mix that is less than 8 pounds, but full of love! Meep was found wandering the streets all on her own. She has a thick, rust colored coat, a curlicue tail, and the cutest tongue that sticks out of her mouth. Like many older adult dogs, Meep has some dental wear and tartar on her teeth but it doesn’t slow her down from gobbling up treats! Meep loves to go on walks and also loves to be held and cuddled. She is a super sweet girl that is eager to please and very affectionate. She seems to like other dogs, too! Meep can be a little fussy when left alone so would absolutely love a home where she has companionship most of the time. Ready to fall in love? Come meet Meep today!

Meep is available for adoption at Kitsap Humane Society (www.kitsap-humane.org) in Silverdale, Washington. Email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org or call 360-692-6977 for more info.

Raisin 05/19/15

Raisin 05/19/15

*ADOPTED*

Raisin

Raisin is an absolutely adorable black wire-haired Dachshund-Terrier mix. Poor Raisin was found out on the streets, so exact age isn’t known but is guessed at about 8 years old. You’ll notice from Raisin’s photos that she has some hair loss on her face and body. Raisin arrived with lots of itchy skin and hair loss and an ear infection. She could have allergies or a skin infection, so she’s getting medication and treatment, but is still pretty uncomfortable and will need a loving owner to continue her treatment and give her lots of TLC until her skin and coat is healed up. Despite her rough appearance, Raisin has a heart of gold! She is super sweet and loves to be by your side. She enjoys short walks and enjoys people watching from her doggie bed. She doesn’t seem to mind other dogs and is an all around calm, gentle girl. Raisin would be so much happier in a home than a kennel – go meet her today!

Raisin is available for adoption at Kitsap Humane Society (www.kitsap-humane.org) in Silverdale, Washington. Email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org or call 360-692-6977 for more info.

Happy 05/19/15

Happy 05/19/15

*ADOPTED*

Happy

Meet Happy! This gentle senior poodle mix loves his lap time but also enjoys a gentle stroll around the yard. Low maintenance Happy is hearing- and vision-impaired but still has a great quality of life. He gets along with other small and calm dogs and likely would do fine with cats, but he would prefer not to be in a home with young children, rambunctious young dogs, or a lot of activity. He adjusts quickly to his space but stairs may be tougher; he’s tolerant of baths but does not like being crated. If you have a quiet home and soft lap for him to cuddle up on, adorable little Happy might be the right dog for you!

Happy is posted for the Humane Society for Tacoma/Pierce County, 253/383-2733.

Candy 05/19/15

Candy 05/19/15

*ADOPTED*

Candy

Candy is an amazing little 6-pound apricot toy poodle mix looking for a loving home! Candy’s guessed to be about 12 years old, but you’d never guess it because she is full of pep like a little energizer bunny! Candy was brought to the shelter because her owners thought she was too active for her and their age. Candy loves to trot around and explore and loves to go on walks. She is very friendly and even tolerates being dressed up. She would love a home where her human companions are with her most the time and she doesn’t have to be left alone for too long. Candy seems to be in good shape for an older gal. She does have some cloudiness in her eyes and has had dental extractions. If you’re looking for a fun, friendly little senior dog, Candy is the girl for you!

Rex 05/19/15

Rex 05/19/15

Rex

“Hi, I’m Rex. When I came to the shelter I was a little overweight and in need of a good teeth cleaning. My foster mom helped me lose weight so I could get my teeth cleaned and now I’m all spiffed up to find my forever home! I’m pretty active for my age and enjoy going for long walks. I am currently living with another dog in my foster home and we get along just fine, and I have lived with cats in my former life. I could live with children who are respectful of my age and size. I’m about 10 years old and weigh 10 pounds now – I’m ready to be your friend! Please contact my foster family for more information at doggiefriend2@aol.com.”

Rudy 05/19/15

Rudy 05/19/15

Rudy

10-year-old Rudy is a 30-pound Beagle. Rudy is described as a wonderful companion who is “snuggly, very loyal and devoted”. He does well with other dogs as long as they are small dogs. Rudy has lived with cats and is fine with them but he does not appreciate young children. He has never lived in a home where he’s been left alone for an entire work day. He can stay alone without anxiety for a few hours but the hope is a home will be found for him where he usually has company. Rudy can do stairs, he’s great on a leash and he has excellent off-leash recall. He loves going for walks and he has fun retrieving sticks in the water in spite of his fear of water. His most favorite place to be is curled up under a blanket next to his person. This fun, handsome dog will reward his new family with his unconditional love. Rudy is in Seattle, Washington.

Rigby 05/17/15

Rigby 05/17/15

Rigby

I’m Rigby, a 20-pound rat terrier. I don’t mean to brag, but my foster mom says I am the sweetest, easiest boy ever. I love to snuggle on the couch with her and don’t mind that the other dogs are hanging around with me. As long as a dog isn’t being pushy and rude to me, I’m fine with them. I n fact I really would prefer to be in a house with other dogs since I feel most relaxed when I have furry buddies around. And cats, well, I can’t say they are my favorite and I prefer to steer clear of them. Older kids are okay, but I’m not a fan of babies and toddlers who tend to get in my face and lurch around too much for my taste. My favorite pastime, other than snuggling with my person, is playing tug. I need to know the person first before I feel ready to play but once I do, watch out! I’m a master. At 10 years old I’m old enough to be fairly chill but still terrier enough to be ready for any adventure. And unlike young whippersnappers, I’ve got some skills under my belt. Once I know where I’m supposed to go and you keep me on a schedule for a bit, I do great at house training. I also know some basics like “sit”, “down”, and “stay”. I weigh 20 pounds so am not so tiny that you’ll step on me but am small enough to squeeze in next to you on the armchair to warm your lap. I’m being fostered in Federal Way, Washington.  Rigby is posted for New Rattitude Rescue.

If you are as smitten with my handsomeness as my foster mom is, you can apply at www.newrattitude.org/adopt.htm.

Jasmine 05/16/15

Jasmine 05/16/15

Jasmine

“Hi! I’m Jasmine, I am 10 years old and weigh 12.6 pounds. I know a couple of basic commands like sit and lay down and I am also housebroken. I get along with cats, dogs, and kids too! I like to play and I am very gentle when I do. After a day of play I would love it if we could just cuddle the night away! I am a very good dog and I act younger than my age!”

Jasmine is a very affectionate and loving girl, friendly to everyone and all animals after a short warm up period. Always there to follow you everywhere and always willing to help assist you you in whatever you are doing. Jasmine loves nothing more than to cuddle w/you or to burrow up in a blanket. She likes to sleep w/someone, but is also content to sleep in a dog bed or on the couch with a blanket. She walks well on a leash, travels great in a car and easily adapts to any situation – nothing seems to faze her. Her purely sweet nature will work wonderfully in most homes. Jasmine has had her teeth cleaned recently along with extractions. She is ready to go!

Jasmine is posted for Love A Mutt Pet Rescue and is in Snoqualmie, Washington. Contact info@loveamutt.org for information or see www.loveamutt.org for an adoption application.

Pearl 05/16/15

Pearl 05/16/15

Pearl

Pearl is a beautiful white and brindle older (8+ years old) Pitbull/Bull Terrier mix who is about 50 pounds. This sweet mature gal arrived at the shelter with some mammary masses, but they were removed when she got her spay surgery. As an older dog with a history of masses she will need her new home to keep an eye on that area to make sure she stays in good health. Pearl is very sweet and friendly. She seems to love everyone she meets and is low-key and well behaved. Sometimes she doesn’t want to share her treats because they are so delicious, but who can blame her? If you’re looking for a wise, wonderful companion who needs a soft bed and lots of kisses, Pearl is the girl for you!

Pearl is available for adoption at Kitsap Humane Society in Silverdale, Washington. For more info, visit www.kitsap-humane.org, email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org or call 360-692-6977.

Baer 05/16/15

Baer 05/16/15

Baer

Are you lookingfor a fun-loving companion that has the perfect balance of maturity and energy? If so, you can stop your search right here! I’m Baer (pronounced Bear) and my foster parents fell in love with me almost immediately. I’m a 9-year-old, 13-pound male rat terrier being fostered in Seattle Washington. I do love walks and have very good leash skills. My foster mom and I have walked for 7+ miles and I didn’t miss a step, but I’m also fine with spending the whole day curled up at her feet. I’m a handsome guy and people often stop me to say “hi” when I’m out on a walk – which is a great thing because I LOVE people. My foster parents say that I’m one of the most human-focused dogs that they’ve fostered. I get along fine with other dogs, but they don’t excite me the same way that people do. However, I also love to chase squirrels, so it would probably be best for everyone that I don’t live with any cats or other small pets that I might chase. In foster care I’ve proven to be reliably house trained when kept on a schedule. Because I’m so attached to my human family it’s probably best if I live where someone is around most of the day. I hate being left alone… I have that great terrier personality and I keep a grin on my foster parents faces with my adorable antics. I’m a super sweet guy who can’t wait to find my forever home!

You can apply to adopt Baer through New Rattitude Rescue, http://www.newrattitude.org/apply.php or if you have general questions about me you can email inquiry@NewRattitude.org.

Sugar 05/16/15

Sugar 05/16/15

Sugar

My name isn’t Sugar for no reason. I am sweet but not sticky clingy. I’m a cairn terrier mix, 10 years old and 20 pounds. While my foster mom really didn’t know a lot about me other than that, she has learned that I’m basically shy and quiet. I lost someone dear and I need to get back to living again. I’m quite curious as to how this will all work out. I like personal attention and snuggling and being petted but I don’t demand a lot of it. I kind of like my personal space and, if invaded, I’ll grumble a bit but it’s harmless. I think we all have our grumbling moments, don’t you? And for those of you who don’t like dogs sharing your bed, you just found the right girl for your bedroom. I
prefer my dog bed..on the floor..in your room. I guess you could call me an aloof lover. Hmmm, now there’s a new phrase for a girlfriend. I do want to be your friend and I want to be so special in your life. I’ll come when you call me and foster mom will confirm I have no bad habits. I eat well and I’m housetrained. Oh yes, I’m good looking and with someone who will love me again and keep me groomed, I will be the most stunning girl in your neighborhood.

Buddy is a super cute, super scruffy, wire haired terrier mix. Buddy arrived at the shelter after being found wandering the streets, so not much is known about his history, but he seems to be an older guy at least 10 years old. Buddy has lots of pep in his step – he loves to go on walks and can be very silly during playtime. But Buddy is also a great snuggle buddy. He is happy to sit by your side, enjoy the sun, or cuddle up in a blanket. Buddy has some pretty funny teeth that stick out in a pronounced underbite, kind of like a cartoon warthog! Like most older dogs he’s got some dental tartar too, but it doesn’t seem to bother him. Buddy is an awesome little dog that just needs a loving home – go meet him today!

Buddy is available for adoption at Kitsap Humane Society in Silverdale, Washington. For more info, visit www.kitsap-humane.org, call 360-692-6977, or email customerservice@kitsap-humane.org.

KImmi 05/11/15

KImmi 05/11/15

Kimmi

Kimmi is an 11 year old, 85 pound Golden Retriever. He does not like other dogs or cats but he does love people! He would do best in a home with kids only 10 and over. Currently Kimmi can go without needing a potty break for 5-6 hours. He is OK to stay alone without any anxiety, content to find a spot to sit and watch the world go by until you come back home. Handsome Kimmi enjoys going for walks and will pull on a leash some (he is a big, strong dog after all) but with some redirection he can be controlled. Kimmi loves playing with playing with balls; he is quite the talented retriever Have you ever had an 85-pound lap dog? Kimmi is in Lake Forest Park, Washington, waiting for a new person to cuddle up with.

George & Phoebe 05/08/15

*ADOPTED*

George & Phoebe

George and Phoebe are miniature schnauzers, 9 and 10 years old. They are house- and crate-trained and good with dogs. George has Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA for short and is blind – he’s the little guy on the left and Phoebe on the right is his housemate. “Together we’re a great team! We love to play, go on walks and generally hang out at home. We know lots of commands: sit, stay, down, play dead, shake and come. Phoebe knows how to roll over but I haven’t mastered that yet. I’m also your ultimate lover boy! When I can find a lap I’m there! Phoebe, on the other hand, is a bit more independent yet always close by. She likes to take care of her master. We are looking for a new home because our mom is going on a very long trip and we can’t go along. She has had us for 5 years and we have given her lots of love and affection. Now it’s time for us to find someone else who needs two cute pups to shower love and affection on!”

Please contact Northwest International Pet Rescue based in Edmonds, Washington for more information on George & Phoebe. An application is available at http://members.petfinder.com/~WA427/index_files/AdoptionApplication.htm.

Yoko GSD1-FS050715

*ADOPTED*

Yoko

Yoko is a stunning, long haired German Shepherd. She weighs 55 pounds and she is almost 10 years old. Yoko is a trained guide dog for her blind owner. She is very well behaved and has been a loyal friend and companion to her for many years. She is going to retire from her “job” so her owner would like to find a new home for her. It’d be best for Yoko to ease into the transition of going to a new home and no longer being a working dog. Her current owner would like to see her through the process and work with her new owners to help make Yoko’s transition as smooth as possible. Since Yoko has been a guide dog, she’s used to being with someone at all times – because of this she cannot be left alone for long. She’d be an excellent therapy dog or a dog to go along to work. She has never lived with other dogs but she does fine with dogs she meets. Yoko has displayed an interest in cats so it’s best that she doesn’t go to a home with them. She is OK with kids age 8 and over. Yoko is used to walking quite a lot; up to 5 miles a day sometimes. She can do stairs and is of course great on a leash. Yoko needs a potty break about every 5 hours and a fenced yard will be a must in her new home. Yoko is a very sweet, gentle dog who deserves a happy retirement in her forever home. She is posted for her owner in Bellingham.

Angus 05/07/15

Angus 05/07/15

*ADOPTED*

Angus

Angus is a 60-pound Springer Spaniel who is almost 13 years old. His life was turned upside down when his person lost her home. A kind neighbor took Angus in and is trying to help him find a forever home. Angus loves other dogs; he would do best in a home with friendly canine companionship. He lives with cats and has lived with kids and he does wonderfully with both. Angus is just an all-around nice dog! He has had some formal training in his past, he is very good on leash and enjoys going for walks. Angus is doing his best to keep up with the younger resident dogs he’s living with now, he still has some “spunk” left! He does not like to be left alone and wants to “keep track” of his person which is understandable since he’s lost so much recently. He would do best in a home where he’s not left alone for long hours. Angus WILL bark when you leave, so that must be taken into consideration. Angus has some rear end weakness so stairs should be minimal and may not work for him at all as time goes on. Charming Angus is described by his caregiver as “soulful, responsive and positive”, she says he’s a dog you can’t help but fall in love with. Angus has a temporary home in Seattle, WA for now but he longs for a forever home. Might that be with you? ODH has not met this dog; we urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.

Aurora 05/06/15

Aurora

Beautiful, sweet Aurora is still looking for her FOREVER home. Aurora is loveable 8 year old pit bull mix, who has sadly been bounced around for a couple of years. She is a little timid at first but very respectful towards other dogs. She doesn’t mind larger dogs that aren’t real active but small dogs annoy her. Aurora does great with cats as well! She is a tad overweight, as you can tell from her picture. She goes up and down the stairs a little slowly but just fine. She is potty trained and great with kids as long as they are polite to her. Aurora deserves to live her final years in the comforts of her very own home!

Roxy & Mingus 05/03/15

Roxy and Mingus

Roxy and Mingus are 8-year-old American Bulldogs. They were not littermates but have been together since they were puppies. Aren’t they great looking dogs? Roxy is a big girl, tall and 120 pounds. Mingus is smaller at 90 pounds. The pair can stay alone for a workday without needing a potty break. Mingus is described as being “a bit co-dependent”; he prefers not be left alone, especially without Roxy. Roxy is friendly w ith other dogs but Mingus has a history of some aggression; he needs more time and care with introductions to other dogs. If you don’t have any other dogs already, they are a great matched set ready to go! Mingus and Roxy live with a cat whom they do fine with. They’ve not had much interaction with kids but in the brief encounters witnessed, they’ve both been gentle and have given lots of kisses. The pair really enjoy a walk a day and do well walking together when on a halti leader. Mingus is said to be a super sweet, cuddly, loyal dog. Roxy is described as “a gentle giant who is a very obedient sweetheart”. Roxy and Mingus are in Portland, Oregon, and in need of a home as soon as possible.

Lady Jane 05/03/15

Lady Jane 05/03/15

Lady Jane

My name is Lady Jane. I was abandoned as a young dog and found on a farm. I am a Mountain Cur breed of dog, I weigh 48 pounds and am between 10 and 11 years old. My human Mom had a stroke and could not care for me. I stayed in a Kennel for about 5 weeks while trying to get adopted. I am a senior dog and it seems most people don’t want seniors. The Kennel was nice to me, but I was very lonely as there weren’t many other dogs. A family member was able to take me in but she cannot keep me. We have been working on my “social” skills with other dogs and I have liked living in a neighborhood for the past two months.
I am very loyal and a good guard dog. I love children; well… I pretty much love all people. I am very neat, I have short hair so I don’t shed and am considered a “Red” color dog (with a few “platinums”). I love to walk fast and even run . I can do stairs too. Everyone tells me that I don’t seem very old because I have a lot “youthful” qualities.
My breed of dog is bred to hunt small critters; I have been trained to “leave it” though, and I usually just need a gentle reminder. I am good around some other dogs but will be a bit picky. I like to sleep, and I don’t hardly bark at all. I like soft music. I have a very expressive face, some say you can almost hear me talk.
My biggest issue is…I don’t like being left alone for more than 3-4 hours at a time as I worry I will be abandoned again. I hope you will consider me to become part of your family. I am in Seattle, waiting for my new home.

She would probably do best with older, respectful children. She is crate trained but is currently left loose in the house during the day and doesn’t cause any trouble. Pearl is approximately 10 years old, just a great overall sweet gal. Pearl loves, loves, loves to play fetch. She also has good manners; she knows sit, shake, and sit pretty with hand signals, and walks well on a leash. Pearl does need a secure confinement and no other female dogs in the household. As common with dogs of her age, she has multiple lipomas, or fatty lumps, which are benign. Pearl would love to be your best friend, go on walks and play together. Duchess

Duchess is a beautiful white German Shepherd. She is 10 years old and she weighs 83 pounds. Duchess has been through heartache and a lot of change in the past few months. Since coming into rescue however she has thrived and she is now ready for a committed forever family. Her foster family say that Duchess is both “strong and smart, eager to please and thrives on routine”. Duchess needs a home with no other dogs or cats. She would, however, love a home with children who will be kind and appreciate her, as she loves kids. Duchess needs a home without stairs and one with a fenced yard where she is not left alone for hours at a time. Duchess had a very traumatic experience in a crate so she does not like them but she does love belly rubs and carrots! Cookie

Hi! I’m Cookie! I am a bright 8-year-old, 65-pound German Shepherd who will thrive in a home with no young kids. I would prefer to be an only dog because I’m picky with my doggy friends but I could live with the right dog. My new family should have some experience with German Shepherds. I have hip dysplasia in both hips. The vet is recommending hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and laser treatments. High quality food, and some good supplements too. I would do best in a home without stairs. My needs are simple: food, shelter, love, regular short walks, and consistent rules. In return I will be your loving and loyal companion for life!

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie 03/18/15

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie are 8-year-old littermates who are said to be a mix of Lab/German Shepherd/Boxer. Whatever their mix is, it is unique and very striking! Casey is a big boy, weighing in at 92 pounds. Carrie is 67 pounds. Carrie and Casey have lived with other dogs and are reportedly appropriately social when meeting new dogs. They have not ever lived with or been observed around cats. The pair have always spent their days outside but have been brought in at night to sleep with their family’s children or in the family home. Ideally they will be able to be inside during the day if they so desire in their new home. Both dogs can do stairs and since they are what we consider to be “young seniors” they would more than likely enjoy getting out for walks and exercise on a regular basis. Carrie has been known to jump a 4 foot fence so a taller fence is a must for her safety. Casey is said to be a very happy dog who is always delighted to see people and is described as “a goofball”. Carrie is described as “very smart and quiet”; she loves receiving attention. The hope is that Carrie and Casey can remain together as they have always been. They are currently in Snohomish, ready for their forever home.

Gracie 12/26/14

Gracie 12/26/14

Gracie

Gracie is an almost 9 year old chihuahua. She weighs 13 pounds (needs to lose a couple more…) and she was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Gracie is a goofy little sweetheart of a dog! She LOVES to be scratched and petted, but she does NOT enjoy sitting on your lap. Gracie is mostly house trained and used to sleeping in a crate with a pee pad at night. She walks very well on a leash when she is leashed up — though she rarely needs a leash when taken outside. Gracie does not really enjoy other dogs or cats, but she tolerates them very well as long as they don’t try to mess with her too much. Gracie would likely do well with older kids that are respectful of dogs and let them have their space.

Gracie is on twice a day insulin which requires a small injection. With a little distraction, the injection is easily done and she can continue her busy day of napping, rolling around in her bed, and waiting for the treat bag to crinkle so she can beg for treats! Gracie is a really great little dog who deserves her own people to dote on her, sing her songs about how cute she is, and scratch her little butt multiple times a day!

KD

KD is a very affectionate, polite old soul, about 11 years. She is eager to greet you and be by your side and she is very loyal to those she likes. KD is an independent girl who would love a calm home without other dogs or children. She does not make friends with other pets, so she would do best with just your love. She does know some commands and she is well behaved in the presence of her human. KD is content with a comfy bed to herself, so she can rest up for outings. She loves long walks!! She walks well on lead and is happy with any outing, car rides included. KD is also presumed housebroken. She does have some minor medical issues including mild arthritis which does not seem to bother her. She also has a mass in her mouth which needs monitoring. She has been at the shelter since August and is getting very stressed in the kennels. This sweet girl needs a calm and comfy forever home.

*ADOPTED*

Chance

Hi there! I’m Chance, an adorable (seriously — just look at my pics!) 8-year-old Chow Chow mix.  I hope these pictures convey what a sweet, lovable guy I am and that I’m ready to find my forever family. During my stay with my foster parents it’s been revealed that I have Cushing’s disease, which means l’ll require ongoing medical care — my foster parents can tell you what this entails. I’m a pretty low-key guy – a couple trips to the local fire hydrant is just about all the exercise I need. I love earning yummy treats during training. My foster parents say I at the end of my basic training course I aced both AKC’s Canine Good Citizen and Canine Good Citizen Advanced tests. I also love being with people! I wonder what “Velcro” means? I hear that word a lot when my name is mentioned. Because of my size (77 lbs) and the occasional exuberance that I exhibit when I think you have a tasty treat, any children in my new home should be at least 10 years old and dog-savvy. I may do okay with other dogs or felines in my new home. Give me a chance – I promise you’ll be glad you did!

Butkus & Abby 03/28/14

Butkus & Abby 03/28/14

Butkus and Abby

Butkus (Buck) and Abby are a wonderful pair of senior Boxers who are completely bonded to each other. Abby is most definitely in charge and Buck happily let’s her run the show. He is such a laid-back type of guy he routinely lets her sit right down on top of him! At 11 years old Buck runs and plays like a puppy and boy can he jump! He has a few creaky joints, but is otherwise in perfect health. The vet thinks it’s possible he has a little bit of Lab mixed in with all his Boxer goodness, which would explain his long legs and could give him some additional longevity. He is a big boy at 90 pounds, but he plays with the very young puppy in his foster home so very gently. He lets that little rascal climb all over him, bite his tail and even try to ride him like a pony, and Buck just gives a small sigh as if to say, “look what I have to put up with!”

Abby is a very young 9 years old with a super sweet temperament. She just wants to be loved on and will wiggle her way into the middle of anyone else getting some attention. She can hear petting going on two rooms away! She does love to be outside and exploring but her favorite thing to do is nap next to her people and Buck.

They absolutely LOVE going in the car! They will race for the door when the magic words “let’s go” are said. They can stay alone in the car with no issues other than a possible move into the front for a better view. Abby and Buck also love walks, but Buck is a major puller. Abby does beautifully on leash and so does Buck when in the right equipment. Neither Buck nor Abby show any kind of aggression about anything. They get along with all sizes of other dogs with proper introductions; however, they would do best in a home without cats. They are superb with children, no jumping up or pushing over. They can be left alone in the home without getting into anything, so crating is not necessary as long as they have each other. They will bark an alert if they hear someone at the door and will head to the fence line when the neighbor’s dog barks, but both stop barking almost immediately. These two amazing dogs would be perfect companions for any family and will most certainly bring such joy and loving that you will just not believe! Abby and Buck are being fostered in Kingston, Washington. This pair is posted for Northwest Boxer Rescue.

Twinkie

Twinkie

Twinkie

I’m Twinkie, a Chihuahua of about 9 years. When I arrived into rescue it was quickly learned that I was easy to care for but that I needed to be monitored so I didn’t have too many treats and get too “round” which is a nice way of saying “fat”. *sigh* Oh, the problems we women have in our middle years and battling weight gain. I learned that car rides and walks were pretty neat things to do so that’s been great exercise. I also have nice ways of letting you know that I need to go out and do my business. Then, I needed to have a bladder stone removed and now I’m a new dog! Not only that, people were awesome and sent in contributions for my vet bill which was close to $1,500. Thank you for believing I was worth it!

I should mention that I probably would do best being the only dog in the house and should avoid small kids. If you want the rest of my resume, please contact my foster mom who can answer any other questions you may have.
