Welcoming a new dog to your household?  Please take a few minutes to review our hints on how to introduce a new dog.

⇒ Why Adopt An Older Dog?      Some thoughts

PLEASE NOTE:

•  Adoption is different than Final Refuge at Old Dog Haven. An adoption means the dog becomes yours, you have ownership and are responsible for the dog’s care including veterinary expenses. Final Refuge means the dog is under ODH’s care, in an ODH foster home that will care for the dog for the rest of its life; with ODH coordinating and paying for vet care and medications.

•  Most of these dogs are in western Washington State.

This page has two categories of adoptable dogs:

  1. ODH adoptable dogs are already in Old Dog Haven foster homes, and are fit enough to be adopted out permanently (versus Final Refuge, where the dog remains at an ODH Final Refuge Foster Home).
  2. Dogs at shelters, other rescues, or with individual owners are looking for a new home. Most of the adoptable dogs listed on this page are in this category and are not in ODH’s care. The shelter, rescue or owner makes the decision about adoptions. ODH is only making referrals to help these dogs find homes.

ADOPTING ONE OF THESE DOGS:

For dogs in ODH homes:

  • Please complete the ‘Adopters Questionnaire‘ and send to our office so we know your particular interests and situation.
  • Each dog is different and will need a different kind of home.
  • ODH will not transport dogs outside the Western Washington area.  Potential adopters must meet the dog, once adoption application is approved.
  • A minimum tax-deductible donation of $95 is requested, more if you are able. (We have given our dogs very extensive vet care thanks to the generosity of our donors and your contribution will help the next old canine.)

For dogs posted for owners, shelters, or other rescue groups:

  • If posted for another group, please use the contact information provided in the profile.
  • If posted for the owner, please email placement@olddoghaven.org and we’ll put you in touch.

Interested in sponsoring a dog? Please check our Final Refuge (permanent foster) dogs.

If you adopt a dog featured on this page – please feel free to email a photo of your new friend with his or her new family to webmaster@olddoghaven.org for possible use here.

ODH Adoptable Dogs

Nemma 04/24/15

Nemma 04/24/15

Nemma

Nemma is an 8-year-old Black Lab Mix (that great breed!) who is looking for her forever home. She has a lot of energy so someone looking for a walking partner would be such a nice for match for her. She seems to do well with other dogs and dog-savvy cats but she would be fine in a home where she is the center of attention; she would love the one-on-one. Nemma is stressed in the shelter environment and would love to go home soon. She weighs 58 pounds and seems to be housebroken.

Nemma is posted for the Everett Animal Shelter, 425/257-6000, and would love to meet you.

Toby 04/24/15

Toby 04/24/15

Toby

Hi, my name is “Toby” and I’m at the Regional Animal Services shelter in Kent waiting for a new home. You can also find me by my ID #A459842. I’m probably a terrier/chihuahua mix, I’m about 9 years old and weigh around 12 pounds. I am a very sweet and curious little guy. I love to explore a yard and go for walks. Once I’m done with my walk, I’d love to have someone to snuggle with ont he couch while I take a nice nap. The vets at the shelter think I have some sort of allergy which is causing a rash on me. They aren’t sure what’s causing it, but you may need to put me on a special diet. Please keep that in mind if you’re considering adopting me. If you’re looking for a happy little guy to join your family, I’d love to meet you – please come and see me today!

Toby is posted for the King County Pet Adoption Center in Kent, call 206-296-3936 and ask about Animal ID Number A459842.

Darinka 04/24/15

Darinka 04/24/15

Darinka

Darinka is a 10-pound senior poodle, a really nice little dog who is being overlooked in the shelter. Shelter staff observe that she is quiet, not needy, apparently housebroken, quite spry, happy to walk nicely on leash and generally very sweet. This is a dog who prefers to hang out by your side rather than in your lap. She has a few medical concerns (cataracts, probable poor hearing, dental issues) but this pretty girl would look really beautiful with a proper haircut and would grace your home with her calm presence. She would like to meet any children (over 10 please) in the home.

Darinka is posted for the Humane Society of Southwest Washington in Vancouver, Washington.  Please contact TZimmermand@southwesthumane.org or 360/693-4746 for more information.

Newton 04/22/15

Newton 04/22/15

Newton

Newton, or simply Newt, is a snuggle bug! This guy is a stout little Chihuahua who is about 8 years old. He loves cats and seems fine with other small, respectful, and like-minded dogs. He doesn’t seem to care much for young boisterous dogs who want to force play all day, but he is a great doggy social teacher as he is good at telling them to calm down. He just had a major dental and only has 4 teeth left now, but he is happy to be rid of those hurting teeth. He will be neutered in a couple weeks and will be able to go into a new home then. If there are other dogs in the home please make sure to talk to the shelter staff about bringing them to the shelter for a meet-n-greet. Newton loves the ladies, but takes a bit longer to warm up to men. He weighs 10 pounds 3 ounces. Newton is the current officemate of the shelter manager. He LOVES to lay on his bed on the desk and just hangs out all day. He will follow her around the shelter and then back to his desk again. Newt would be a fabulous office dog whether it be in the home or not, he loves nothing more than to tag along with his person.

Newton is posted for Camano Animal Shelter on Camano Island, 360-387-1902 http://www.camanoanimalshelter.org/

Bingo 04/20/15

Bingo

Bingo is an adorable, fluffy little man who has a big heart and big personality! This 10-pound Bichon Frise mix, 9 years old, gets along great with other dogs and enjoys meeting folks of all ages. Bingo is best suited for a family with a rotating schedule and another doggy companion to hang out with, as he is a social boy. Looking for a little snuggle bug to warm up the couch? Bingo would love to meet you!

Leon 04/20/15

Leon 04/20/15

Leon

Leon

Leon

Leon is a very sweet 10-year-old, 56-pound Australian Shepherd. Leon is deaf but that doesn’t mean this old dog can’t learn new tricks! Leon already knows Sit, Easy and Come in sign language. He came into the shelter so badly matted that he had to be shaved, but his bloodwork indicates that he’s a pretty healthy guy underneath. He’s a little arthritic and does best when he’s on arthritis medication which should be continued for the rest of his life to help keep him comfortable. Leon is a friendly and cuddly dog who would probably do best in a home with no cats. He would need to meet any other dogs prior to adoption. Leon is strong on the leash and tries to chase cars, so he will need a fenced yard or a strong owner to walk him. Leon enjoys human contact and petting, but would do best with gentle handling and a home with no children under the age of 12.

Leon is posted for the Auburn Valley Humane Society at (253) 249-7849 or email at info@auburnvalleyhs.org.

Tank 04/19/15

Tank 04/19/15

Tank

Meet Tank, a wonderful Golden Retriever/Lab mix, 8 years old, full of energy and very sweet. He loves people and especially would like to be an only dog. He does love to play with four-legged friends (unless you are a cat, he will then get very excited and chase). Tank is currently 98 pounds so may be too big for very young children. He is very gentle, loves car rides and going on adventures. He is looking for a home that will love him forever.

Tank is posted for WAG and is fostered in Sequim, Washington. Please email Barb at Sequimgal@gmail.com for an application.

Miles 04/18/15

Miles 04/18/15

Miles

This is a very special little guy..his name is Miles and he is pretty much blind from cataracts. He listens to your voice and follows you around, he loves to have his chest and neck scratched and loves to be held. Perhaps another little dog could be his eyes and best friend? Miles is a senior neutered male terrier mix, he is in the puppy room at the shelter so he does not walk into a cement wall on the adoption floor. If you would like to help an adorable little guy have a happy life, please go meet Miles.

Miles is posted for the Humane Society of Cowlitz County (https://www.facebook.com/cowlitzhumane) 909 Columbia Blvd, Longview, WA 98632 – ask about ID#145549.

Brutus 04/18/15

Brutus 04/18/15

Brutus

What a hunk Brutus is! He is believed to be a Boston Terrier mixed with perhaps English or French Bulldog? He weighs 35 pounds and is about 13 years old. Brutus has not lived with another dog for a few years but he does get excited to meet new dogs. He lives with a kitty now that he loves. Brutus has been great with kids of all ages but he’d do best with older kids because he will chase kids who run; he would not hurt a child but sometimes he scares them. Brutus does fine on leash and he is very happy to go on short walks. Because he is a brachycephalic breed, however, care must be taken so that he does not overheat. He can do stairs in spite of showing signs of having arthritis and he is hard of hearing (completely expected in a dog this age). Currently Brutus spends a lot of time alone; he needs a new home where he can get out to potty every 4-6 hours. Someone will be very lucky to add this handsome boy to their family. Brutus is in Olympia, Washington ready for his new family.

Email Olddoghaven about Brutus.

Boomer 04/18/15

Boomer 04/18/15

*ADOPTED*

Boomer

Boomer is a handsome and mature Jack Russell gentleman looking for a loving forever home. He was surrendered to the shelter after his elderly owner could no longer offer him the care she felt he deserved. He is a bit older but still very spunky and active. He may be partially blind and deaf, but it doesn’t stop him from a good game of fetch. He loves toys and will entertain himself even when alone. He still likes to get out for a nice, brisk walk and then curl up for a nice nap. Due to his somewhat nervous personality and trouble seeing, he would do best in a quiet, adult-only home where he can feel safe and take his time adjusting. He has a clean bill of health and has many happy years to spend with his new family. If you want to provide Boomer with a second chance at having a wonderful home please visit the shelter in Bellingham, Washington.

Angel 04/18/15

Angel 04/18/15

Angel

Angel is a 9-year-old pit mix that loves to hang out with her people. She is good with most other dogs, but can be dog-selective so proper introductions are important. She gets along with kids and people and loves to lounge in the sun. She does well in a crate, or just hanging out on the couch. Angel can do stairs and can make it an 8-hour day without needing to potty. Angel is fostered in Vaughn, Washington with meets scheduled in Tacoma.

Lady 04/18/15

Lady

Lady is an 11-year-old pit/shar pei mix. She came into rescue after her owner passed away and is looking for a wonderful home to live out the rest of her days. She is low maintenance, all she needs in life is a good bone and a good nap. She gets along with other dogs and is currently fostered with cats. She would probably do best with older, respectful children. She is crate trained but is currently left loose in the house during the day and doesn’t cause any trouble. Lady can do stairs, she just needs a little extra time, and can go an 8-hour day without needing to potty. Lady is fostered in Tacoma, Washington.

Shady

Shady is a 15-year-old, petite 3-legged black Lab. Her mobility is limited due to her age and missing leg, but she can stand up on her own and get around. S he needs regular access to go outside every few hours. Shady can do hardwood floors or tile, but does a lot better with throw rugs and runners helping her out. She gets along with dogs and cats and is good with older respectful kids, especially if they throw her a ball or frisbee! She will need a stair-free home. Shady is fostered in Vaughn, Washington with meets scheduled in Tacoma.

Pearl - showing off her smile!

Pearl – showing off her smile!

Pearl

Pearl is approximately 10 years old, just a great overall sweet gal. Pearl loves, loves, loves to play fetch. She also has good manners; she knows sit, shake, and sit pretty with hand signals, and walks well on a leash. Pearl does need a secure confinement and no other female dogs in the household. As common with dogs of her age, she has multiple lipomas, or fatty lumps, which are benign. Pearl would love to be your best friend, go on walks and play together. She is a loving girl that just wants to be loved back. If you think Pearl is the right addition to your family, please visit the shelter to meet her!

Roscoe 04/17/15

Roscoe 04/17/15

Roscoe

Roscoe is a 30-pound, 11-year-old Pug/Pomeranian/American Eskimo Mix. Roscoe is a very cute, loyal, and affectionate companion. He loves to find a comfy pillow and cuddle up on the bed with his person. Roscoe would do well in any type of home environment, though he does chase cats so they will either have to be confident or have a cat-free home. He gets along well with other dogs and farm animals. He also gets along with kids of all ages. Despite his age he is in extremely good health. Roscoe would need a large fenced yard or some acreage.

Bear 04/17/15

Bear 04/17/15

Bear

Bear is a 30-pound, 8-year-old Pug/Pomeranian/American Eskimo mix. Bear absolutely loves attention and he is hard to resist with his adorable face and cute personality. He loves to be on the bed with his person although he tends to get too warm and will get down. Bear will need some house-training reminders when he moves into his new home. He loves being outside but also likes the warmth of a nice warm blanket in the house. Bear does well around farm animals and other dogs but can be fearful with some dogs; he does warm up to them and has no fear aggression. He is known to chase cats and will have to live in a cat free home or with confident cats. Bear would do well with kids of all ages as he just ignores them.

Chico 04/17/15

Chico 04/17/15

Chico

Chico, the little man! Chico is a 13-year-old male 12-pound little guy, a mess when he came into a shelter. It’s unclear what kind of a life he had but he was clearly not a priority for his owner. Now he’s had a lot of care and is looking for a good and loving retirement home. Chico is very friendly and his tail wags at everyone. He is in a foster home with 2 large dogs and will be found trying to snuggle up with them. He loves to go for walks and, when playing in the yard, has no interest in digging or trying to escape. He is active for his age and still loves to go on adventures! He loves to ride in the car and is happy to meet anyone…including the vet. He is a sweet little guy who needs a break to be able to live out his life in comfort and with love. Won’t you be his new forever?

Chico is posted for Love A Mutt Pet Rescue and is fostered in Snoqualmie, Washington. Contact info@loveamutt.org for information or see www.loveamutt.org for an adoption application.

Tucker & Moose 04/17/15

Tucker & Moose 04/17/15

Tucker & Moose

Tucker and Moose are very closely bonded senior friends who are in desperate need of a home together. Tucker is a 17 pound “Tweenie” who is almost 15 years old. Moose is a female; she will be 12 years old in August, she weighs 14 pounds. Moose does great with other dogs, Tucker does well too but prefers smaller dogs. It is the hope that the pair can find a forever home with no other dogs. They have never lived with cats and it is unknown as how to they would do with children, because of their ages and size, older children might be OK. In January of this year their beloved owner passed away. Tucker and Moose stayed alone in the home for months with a caregiver coming over to take them out for potty breaks and feed them. They have recently been moved to a boarding facility. Tucker and Moose can go about 4-6 hours without needing a potty break. Because of their low-rider builds, they do not “do” stairs, they use ramps. Tucker reportedly acts like a 4 year old, he can jump feet into the air when it’s meal time (so much for acting your age!). He LOVES getting out for walks and takes the lead to scout out the area ahead of Moose. He is said to be a happy boy with a huge heart, he just wants to please his people. Moose has skin allergies so she is on a special diet and benefits from medicated baths. She too loves walks but she is more of the “stop and smell the roses” type of walker. Moose was devoted to her deceased owner who was a man, she seems to really have soft spot for men. She is described as being a very smart girl who is patient and cuddly. Opening your heart and home to a bonded pair of dogs can be very rewarding, knowing you have kept friends together and watching them is a touching thing to witness. Moose and Tucker are currently in Redmond, Oregon, hoping for a very home soon.

Tucker & Moose are posted for Hearts4Doxies Rescue. For more information call 425-221-1081 or email: hearts4doxies@gmail.com.

Dallas 04/17/15

Dallas 04/17/15

*ADOPTED*

Dallas

Meet Dallas. He’s an adorable 9-year-old, 7 ½-pound Chihuahua mix from California. Although Dallas was blessed with some pretty big ears, he was born with a small liver and small vessels in his liver. It’s worked fine for him over the years, and the vet says that his liver could get worse with time and Dallas may need to go on a special diet or it could stay the same forever. Right now, all systems are go!!! Dallas is such a sweet little guy. He does well with other respectful, low-energy dogs and would probably do fine with cats and gentle children over 10 years of age. Oh, by the way, who among us doesn’t have his/her own little quirks? Well, Dallas would like you to know that he doesn’t like eating from a bowl – he prefers a plate! The shelter welcomes you to meet little sunny Dallas!

Luke 04/17/15

Luke 04/17/15

Luke

Luke is a 9-1/2-year old husky mix who spent much of his previous life living chained in a yard, as his owners didn’t have a fence and (common to his breed) he is a runner. Since Luke arrived at Forget Me Not shelter, he has made it quite clear that, while he enjoys going out for walks and exploring the great outdoors with a human friend (and/or with his other friends, he likes all the dogs we have), he now wants to be a house dog. He runs back to the building to go inside and snuggle up with a good squeaky toy, and will often go over to a sitting volunteer and just put his head on their lap for skritches. He has the typical thick coat of a husky and enjoys being brushed. He is likely to prefer a home that is kept on the cool side, and one with hard floors which are cooler than carpet, so he can self-regulate his temperature when he is inside.

Luke LOVES to communicate – he prefers a meaty, drawn out howwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwl, rather than a simple bark, and he will share his thoughts with you if he thinks you aren’t paying enough attention to him… if you ARE paying enough attention to him and he is enjoying it… if he is saying hello when he sees you… if he is saying goodbye as you are leaving… and if you enjoy singing in his presence, he will be happy to join in. Luke would not make a good apartment or condo dog, unless your neighbors also enjoy singing and howling.

He has been great with all types of people and every dog he has met so far. He was indifferent about the cats we introduced him to – smart enough to back slowly away from the one that hissed, but calm enough to let the dog-friendly kitty sniff noses and rub on his face. We recommend never leaving Luke outside by himself for a long period, even if you have a TALL no-climb fence; he is much more interested in being around people than in sitting outside by himself, and with a breed known to have a tendency to get bored and run off, leaving him out unattended is just not a good idea. He is very happy to hang out inside, where he will enjoy helping you cook (he is a MASTER counter surfer, very quiet when seeking out a great treasure for his tummy, and tall enough to see everything you are trying to hide from him). He will love watching TV with you… going for walks or gentle hikes… snoozing on a lazy afternoon. Luke would prefer to have someone retired, like he is, or at least someone that will be home with him or will take him with them on adventures.

He has had a dental cleaning and a full geriatric blood screening with no areas of concern. After a long walk, he has a little stiffness in his legs/hips so he is starting on joint supplements. Due to his size – he is about 90 pounds and tall – Luke would do best without needing to navigate several flights of stairs every time he goes in and out. A few stairs should be no problem for Luke at this time. He is currently fighting a stubborn ear infection, which seems to be improving and is being treated until gone. Luke is learning about squeaky toys – he hasn’t quite figured out about playing yet, but he does like to find the squeaker and squeak it over and over again, and will run up, tail wagging, to say “WOW, check this out, it makes NOISES!!!” He is very cute and puppyish in his enthusiasm. He will make an easy-going, loyal friend to someone. He enjoys spending some time outside, particularly if you go out to play with him, and would be a pretty good walking companion – he has been very good on leash.

Luke is posted for the Forget-Me-Not shelter in Republic, Washington, who offer a 30-day money-back trial adoption period. Can’t go to Republic? Don’t let that stop you! They have monthly transports to both the Seattle area and Spokane, delivering adopted pets to their new owners.

Harley 04/16/15

Harley 04/16/15

Harley

Harley is a lovely chocolate Labrador Retriever lady who is 11 years old. She’s a big girl at 90 pounds but she can reportedly still do stairs in spite of some arthritis. Harley has lived with other dogs and cats but currently lives without either. She is blind so she prefers calm dogs as she can get a bit nervous around active dogs. Harley does very well with children who are gentle with her. She is great on a leash and she enjoys short daily walks. As can be the case with older dogs she takes daily medication to help with urinary leakage. Harley is fine to stay alone for a work day and she can go for about 8 hours without needing a potty break, but we hope Harley’s new home will be one where she’s not left alone for such long periods of time. Harley is said to be a “very sweet and loving dog with low energy”. We think she sounds just wonderful! Harley is in Seattle, waiting to be your new best friend.

Duchess 04/16/15

Duchess 04/16/15

Duchess

Duchess is a beautiful white German Shepherd. She is 10 years old and she weighs 83 pounds. Duchess has been through heartache and a lot of change in the past few months. Since coming into rescue however she has thrived and she is now ready for a committed forever family. Her foster family say that Duchess is both “strong and smart, eager to please and thrives on routine”. Duchess needs a home with no other dogs or cats. She would, however, love a home with children who will be kind and appreciate her, as she loves kids. Duchess needs a home without stairs and one with a fenced yard where she is not left alone for hours at a time. Duchess had a very traumatic experience in a crate so she does not like them but she does love belly rubs and carrots! It is hoped that with time and patience, Duchess will feel more secure and she will be able to manage being left alone. She is described as being “a wonderful dog who is loving and loyal”.

Duchess is posted for Rebecca’s Rainbow, and is in Auburn, Washington. Contact michelehayward@rebeccasrainbow.org for more information.

Kyrie 04/13/15

Kyrie 04/13/15

Kyrie

Kyrie is an exotic looking Border Collie mix. She weighs 60 pounds and is between 9 and 10 years old. Kyrie does not appreciate the younger dog in her home but does well when meeting other dogs off leash. She would prefer to be an only dog, devoting her attention to her people. Kyrie lived with a very old cat and was fine with her. It is believed she could live with a “calm cat”, one that wouldn’t engage or challenge her. Kyrie currently lives with a young child and there is too much unpredictability with him for her comfort; teenage boys also make Kyrie nervous. Kyrie knows all the basic commands, she makes a great watch dog and she is very in tune to your body language. She is excellent on a leash and loves going for walks. Additionally she enjoys keeping you company while you garden and is a great ride-along buddy for car rides. She can do stairs and stay alone for a workday without needing a potty break. Kyrie takes inexpensive medication for her thyroid as well as an anti-inflammatory for her joints. She is described as a “wonderful dog” who will put her head in your lap and look up at you for pets and will jump STRAIGHT up in the air to greet you. Kyrie is in Woodinville, Washington hoping for her forever home.

Poncho 04/11/15

Poncho 04/11/15

Poncho

Poncho is a 13-year-old, 11 pound-Miniature Pincher. He has lived with other dogs and is fine when meeting new ones; he likes to cuddle up to big, friendly dogs! Poncho has lived with cats and he is good with gentle children after a proper introduction. Like many of his breed, he can be unsure when meeting new people; he is a sensitive guy but once he gets to know you he is a lover. He is a little wary of men and doesn’t appreciate loud, scary noises. Poncho loves giving “hugs” and snuggling with you. Poncho loves to get out for daily walks and is fine on leash. He does have some arthritis but he can still do stairs. His ideal home would be with someone who is either retired or works from home as he is a great companion dog. He needs a potty break every few hours but is pee-pad trained for your convenience. Handsome little Poncho needs a forever home very soon. He is currently in Everett, Washington.

Zoe 04/05/15

Zoe 04/05/15

Zoe

Zoe is a 9-year-old French Bulldog, the most affectionate and sweetest Frenchie ever. She is in good health and is always ready to snuggle. Zoe may do well paired with one very passive non-reactive dog in the home, but she does have leash aggression which can be hard for many people especially during an introduction stage. She would also be perfect as the only dog where she doesn’t need to share the attention and she may deserve this in her golden years. She loves hanging out and playing and will need a home with a fenced yard since the dog park isn’t up her alley. Zoe is a sweetie who just wants love and attention. She would thrive in the lap of a homebody like herself. She is fully potty trained, weighs around 25 pounds and has not lived with cats before. She is so deserving of a home! Zoe is posted for Bulldog Haven Northwest.

Please email BHNW, adopt@bulldoghavennw.org, for information about Zoe and an application.

Stovie, a “Chug” (chihuahua/pug mix) is 11 years old and 18 pounds. He is a sturdy boy with thick apricot coat and delicately shaded upright ears. Stovie is a jolly boy, always enthusiastic, not aggressive or food-possessive. He expects the same courtesy from other dogs and doesn’t always get it. He has a large “vocabulary” of words that he knows and responds to, uses the dogdoor, rides fine in the car and walks fairly well on a leash.

Chloe

This beautiful girl’s name is Chloe. She is a husky mix who weighs 65 pounds. Chloe’s exact age is unknown but she is guessed to be 13-15 years old. No one has told Chloe how old she is, however! She still can still do stairs and loves to go for short walks. She also enjoys running and playing in the yard, she just can’t do it as long as she used to. Chloe is described as “low maintenance, a very calm dog”. Sweet Chloe has been around other dogs and is social and submissive with them. She has never lived with or been observed around cats. Chloe is good with children who will be gentle with her. She is fine to stay alone for a workday, reportedly going up to 10 hours without needing a potty break. However, due to her advanced age, it’d be best to not expect her to “hold it” for so long. Chloe is in Spanaway, Washington, waiting to grace her new home with her presence.

8-year-old Bonnie is a beautiful Pit Bull mix who weighs 45 pounds. She is good with other dogs that have similar energy as she does; she does not appreciate pesky puppies (and who can blame her?). Cookie 03/20/15

Cookie 03/20/15

Cookie

Hi! I’m Cookie! I am a bright 8-year-old, 65-pound German Shepherd who will thrive in a home with no young kids. I would prefer to be an only dog because I’m picky with my doggy friends but I could live with the right dog. My new family should have some experience with German Shepherds. I have hip dysplasia in both hips. The vet is recommending hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and laser treatments. High quality food, and some good supplements too. I would do best in a home without stairs. My needs are simple: food, shelter, love, regular short walks, and consistent rules. In return I will be your loving and loyal companion for life!

Shiloh

Shiloh

Shiloh

Shiloh is a loveable, mellow 11-year-old, compact 60-pound black lab mix. She enjoys belly rubs, playing fetch, taking walks and going for rides. She gets along well with other dogs and most people although she is shy of SOME men. She has been tempted to chase the cat. She is housetrained and manages stairs very well.

Shiloh would do best with someone who is at home most of the day or can take a dog to work with them, she would be an ideal dog for going to work with her person. She is an absolute dear and a treasure. We don’t want her to be lonely. She also will need a minimum of a half hour walk every day and some time to play fetch. She is a loyal companion who is happy to hang out quietly with you.
Shiloh’s foster mom says: “Now I am looking for an absolutely fantastic home for her. Every dog I have fostered so far has ended up with a better deal than I could give them if I kept them. I’ve come to realize that’s my gold standard and that’s what I need to find for any dog I foster.” Can YOU bring home “the gold?” Shiloh is posted for Rebecca’s Rainbow, and is in Olympia WA. Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie 03/18/15

Casey & Carrie

Casey & Carrie are 8-year-old littermates who are said to be a mix of Lab/German Shepherd/Boxer. Whatever their mix is, it is unique and very striking! Casey is a big boy, weighing in at 92 pounds. Carrie is 67 pounds. Carrie and Casey have lived with other dogs and are reportedly appropriately social when meeting new dogs. They have not ever lived with or been observed around cats. The pair have always spent their days outside but have been brought in at night to sleep with their family’s children or in the family home. Ideally they will be able to be inside during the day if they so desire in their new home. Both dogs can do stairs and since they are what we consider to be “young seniors” they would more than likely enjoy getting out for walks and exercise on a regular basis. Carrie has been known to jump a 4 foot fence so a taller fence is a must for her safety. Casey is said to be a very happy dog who is always delighted to see people and is described as “a goofball”. Carrie is described as “very smart and quiet”; she loves receiving attention. The hope is that Carrie and Casey can remain together as they have always been. They are currently in Snohomish, ready for their forever home.

Hello from Millie! I am an approximately 10-year-old Boxer. Don’t let my age fool you! I love to go on walks and still have plenty of energy. I love to cuddle on the couch with my foster family. Gracie 12/26/14

Gracie 12/26/14

Gracie

Gracie is an almost 9 year old chihuahua. She weighs 13 pounds (needs to lose a couple more…) and she was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Gracie is a goofy little sweetheart of a dog! She LOVES to be scratched and petted, but she does NOT enjoy sitting on your lap. Gracie is mostly house trained and used to sleeping in a crate with a pee pad at night. She walks very well on a leash when she is leashed up — though she rarely needs a leash when taken outside. Gracie does not really enjoy other dogs or cats, but she tolerates them very well as long as they don’t try to mess with her too much. Gracie would likely do well with older kids that are respectful of dogs and let them have their space.

Gracie is on twice a day insulin which requires a small injection. With a little distraction, the injection is easily done and she can continue her busy day of napping, rolling around in her bed, and waiting for the treat bag to crinkle so she can beg for treats! Gracie is a really great little dog who deserves her own people to dote on her, sing her songs about how cute she is, and scratch her little butt multiple times a day!

KD 11/06/14

KD

KD is a very affectionate, polite old soul, about 11 years. She is eager to greet you and be by your side and she is very loyal to those she likes. KD is an independent girl who would love a calm home without other dogs or children. She does not make friends with other pets, so she would do best with just your love. She does know some commands and she is well behaved in the presence of her human. KD is content with a comfy bed to herself, so she can rest up for outings. She loves long walks!! She walks well on lead and is happy with any outing, car rides included. KD is also presumed housebroken. She does have some minor medical issues including mild arthritis which does not seem to bother her. She also has a mass in her mouth which needs monitoring. She has been at the shelter since August and is getting very stressed in the kennels. This sweet girl needs a calm and comfy forever home.

Chance 11/06/14

Chance 11/05/14

Chance

Hi there! I’m Chance, an adorable (seriously — just look at my pics!) 8-year-old Chow Chow mix.  I hope these pictures convey what a sweet, lovable guy I am and that I’m ready to find my forever family. During my stay with my foster parents it’s been revealed that I have Cushing’s disease, which means l’ll require ongoing medical care — my foster parents can tell you what this entails. I’m a pretty low-key guy – a couple trips to the local fire hydrant is just about all the exercise I need. I love earning yummy treats during training. My foster parents say I at the end of my basic training course I aced both AKC’s Canine Good Citizen and Canine Good Citizen Advanced tests. I also love being with people! I wonder what “Velcro” means? I hear that word a lot when my name is mentioned. Because of my size (77 lbs) and the occasional exuberance that I exhibit when I think you have a tasty treat, any children in my new home should be at least 10 years old and dog-savvy. I may do okay with other dogs or felines in my new home. Give me a chance – I promise you’ll be glad you did!

ODH has not met this dog; we urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.

Chance (SAS ID #14-15013) is being adored in a Seattle Animal Shelter foster home. If you would like to meet him, you must submit a Dog Adoption Application to SAS. Butkus & Abby 03/28/14

Butkus & Abby 03/28/14

Butkus and Abby

Butkus (Buck) and Abby are a wonderful pair of senior Boxers who are completely bonded to each other. Abby is most definitely in charge and Buck happily let’s her run the show. He is such a laid-back type of guy he routinely lets her sit right down on top of him! At 11 years old Buck runs and plays like a puppy and boy can he jump! He has a few creaky joints, but is otherwise in perfect health. The vet thinks it’s possible he has a little bit of Lab mixed in with all his Boxer goodness, which would explain his long legs and could give him some additional longevity. He is a big boy at 90 pounds, but he plays with the very young puppy in his foster home so very gently. He lets that little rascal climb all over him, bite his tail and even try to ride him like a pony, and Buck just gives a small sigh as if to say, “look what I have to put up with!”

Abby is a very young 9 years old with a super sweet temperament. She just wants to be loved on and will wiggle her way into the middle of anyone else getting some attention. She can hear petting going on two rooms away! She does love to be outside and exploring but her favorite thing to do is nap next to her people and Buck.

They absolutely LOVE going in the car! They will race for the door when the magic words “let’s go” are said. They can stay alone in the car with no issues other than a possible move into the front for a better view. Abby and Buck also love walks, but Buck is a major puller. Abby does beautifully on leash and so does Buck when in the right equipment. Neither Buck nor Abby show any kind of aggression about anything. They get along with all sizes of other dogs with proper introductions; however, they would do best in a home without cats. They are superb with children, no jumping up or pushing over. They can be left alone in the home without getting into anything, so crating is not necessary as long as they have each other. They will bark an alert if they hear someone at the door and will head to the fence line when the neighbor’s dog barks, but both stop barking almost immediately. These two amazing dogs would be perfect companions for any family and will most certainly bring such joy and loving that you will just not believe! Abby and Buck are being fostered in Kingston, Washington. This pair is posted for Northwest Boxer Rescue.

ODH has not met these dogs; we urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.

Twinkie

Twinkie

Twinkie

I’m Twinkie, a Chihuahua of about 9 years. When I arrived into rescue it was quickly learned that I was easy to care for but that I needed to be monitored so I didn’t have too many treats and get too “round” which is a nice way of saying “fat”. *sigh* Oh, the problems we women have in our middle years and battling weight gain. I learned that car rides and walks were pretty neat things to do so that’s been great exercise. I also have nice ways of letting you know that I need to go out and do my business. Then, I needed to have a bladder stone removed and now I’m a new dog! Not only that, people were awesome and sent in contributions for my vet bill which was close to $1,500. Thank you for believing I was worth it!

I should mention that I probably would do best being the only dog in the house and should avoid small kids. If you want the rest of my resume, please contact my foster mom who can answer any other questions you may have.

ODH has not met this dog; we urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.
