8 year old Benson is a magnificent boy! Reported to be a Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepherd mix, he is a large fellow weighing 95 pounds. While he is a loving boy who is a great companion for adults, he is not meant for a home with young children or small animals. He has killed a chicken and a wild rabbit.

It has been a few years since Benson lived with another dog. In his home he is an only animal and this suits him just fine. Currently one of his humans is home almost all of the time. He has not recently spent much time alone but we are told when he has been left alone inside his home he has behaved himself. Of course one needs to allow him to settle in before leaving him at home alone. Leaving a dog for short periods of time to gradually let them adapt and learn you are coming back is always best for a dog when they first arrive.

Benson enjoys daily walks. He is said to be good on leash but because of his size, his adopter should be able to manage his strength. Benson loves to run and play for short spurts. A home with a securely fenced yard would be perfect for Benson. This would give Benson a place to explore or just hang out when he’s not lounging inside the house. Benson loves playing with balls (though we are told he destroys them). His favorite toy is a full sized basketball that is partially deflated. Benson also loves playing in water. He has fun chasing a laser pointer, just like a cat!

Benson has arthritis in his knees and front shoulder. He takes Cosequin and a veterinarian prescribed Vetprofen to help with this. For this reason, a home without many stairs would be best for Benson. He is not much of a barker, we are told he only barks when he sees other dogs. However, he has been friendly with friendly dogs he meets while on leash.

Benson is located in Federal Way, WA. For contact information please email: referrals@olddoghaven.org

This is a courtesy post. Benson is not an Old Dog Haven dog. We urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.
