Cookie came into a big shelter as a wreck: blind in both eyes with one ruptured (likely from genetic problems), just finished nursing pups, a matted mess. We removed the painfully ruptured eye and are keeping the other one comfortable with meds; her ear infections are under control with regular care; her bladder stones have been sent packing, and her itchy skin is mostly quiet. Emotional repair was harder. After more than 2 years with us, the healthy little blind Cocker who was glued to her mom and loved running very fast around the pasture was lost to a sudden inflammation in her lymph nodes and face; no definitive diagnosis was made but medical treatment failed and we ended her pain. This wonderfully gentle dog was still wagging that little stub to the very end, so happy to have love and attention. She leaves a very large hole in her home and our hearts.
