Dexter – Adoption Pending
Affectionate and friendly
Dexter gives new meaning to the concept of a “sweet little old gentleman”. His rescuers say he is probably a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix. Deter weighs 13 pounds. Reportedly 10 years old (the rescue’s vet thinks he may be a little younger). Dexter used to be the close companion of an older, wheelchair-bound man, and after his papa died the family approached us for help finding him a new forever home.
This little guy is such an easy companion! Nothing fazes him – he’s consistently calm and politely interested in whatever is going on. He loves going for walks, and – given practice – would probably be good for a couple miles of casual hiking or strolls around the neighborhood. But when nothing much is happening he’s content just to hang out on his bed, watching life pass by. Dexter is affectionate and friendly but not needy, and he gets on well with other dogs, cats and birds (as well as humans).
Dexter has excellent house manners. He is reliably house-trained, has no bad habits, and can be trusted loose in the house without supervision. He walks well on a leash and his recall is good (provided he hears you),
Dexter has cataracts so he doesn’t see too well, and his hearing isn’t great. He also has a small cherry eye that doesn’t seem to cause him discomfort. Dexter’s teeth were in horrible shape when the rescue took him in, so a full mouth extraction was necessary – but he still eats well and enjoys the occasional chew, and his facial muscle control is good so he doesn’t walk around with his tongue lolling out. Despite all of that he’s in pretty good shape – no arthritis, a nice strong heart, and all internal organs functioning well. Dexter has been neutered, microchipped, treated for parasites, and fully vaccinated.
Dexter is posted for the Hearthfire Animal Rescue Team. Currently Dexter is living in a foster home in Kennewick, Eastern Washington. If necessary his rescuers will transport him to an approved adoptive home in the Pacific Northwest.
