In the spirit of giving second chances to the most vulnerable among us, we introduce you to Eugene Hermit Krabs, or “Hermit” as he’s affectionately known. At the estimated age of 14 years and weighing just 6lbs, Hermit’s journey to Old Dog Haven is one of resilience and hope.

Found as a stray, caked in mud and carrying the weight of neglect, Hermit’s initial state was heartbreaking. Deemed too frail and medically challenged for adoption, his fate seemed uncertain until Old Dog Haven stepped in. Just a week before Thanksgiving, Hermit found sanctuary in the loving arms of a permanent foster home, prepared for what was anticipated to be a brief but compassionate final chapter.

Yet, with the spirit of a fighter, Hermit embraced life in his new haven. Celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas alongside his senior foster siblings, Ida Mae and Lemon Poppyseed, Hermit has shown us the true meaning of resilience. Despite a rocky start that included many vet visits and a trip to urgent care, it was the generosity of donors like you that provided him with the critical medical care he needed to not just survive, but thrive.

Hermit’s health challenges were many: untreated Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), a heart murmur, heart disease, severely luxated patellas, irritated skin, an ear infection, a suspicious lump, and a jaw weakened by severe dental disease, leaving him toothless and with two oronasal fistulas. Yet, through the dedicated care funded by our compassionate community, Hermit’s conditions have stabilized and even shown improvement. His skin issues have healed, and he’s finally gaining weight on a diet tailored to his unique needs.

Despite his physical limitations, Hermit’s spirit is unbreakable. He enjoys the simple pleasures of life: snuggling with Lemon Poppyseed, embarking on exploratory walks, standing up to Ida Mae’s bossiness, and basking in the warmth of the fireplace. Each day with Hermit is a gift, a testament to the power of love and medical care.
