“Hello! My name is Neville. I am a 9 year old maltese who weighs about 10 pounds. My person is looking for a better home for me. I have been well loved since I was a puppy but a big move and many life changes have made it so life is not what it used to be for me. I would love a home where people don’t leave the house to work long hours away.

“Up until recently I had a dog friend. I lived with her all of my life until she became very old. She couldn’t see or hear well in the end and she would walk into me by accident. I didn’t understand why she was doing this so I’d get mad at her. Most of the time though, we were together and we’d even cuddle at night. It may be nice to find a calm, older dog like myself who can show me the ways in my new home. They would have to be a nice dog though! I will need time to adapt once I move so I will need to be shown kindness and patience too.

“I have never lived with or seen a cat before. I can’t say for sure what I would do if I saw one but my person doesn’t think I’d chase one. I live with young children now and I would much prefer a home without such young ones. Maybe older kids who did their own thing except to give me pets or take me for leashed walks would be OK?

“Speaking of walks, I enjoy them and I am very good on leash. I don’t pull as some dogs will. Playing fetch is fun! I will retrieve the ball if you throw it to me. I used to love going out and about on errands with my person, she’d carry me around in a bag and it was so nice. I enjoyed car rides.  It would be wonderful to have a person who has time to do those things with me again. At my age, I’m a young senior. I can still manage stairs and get the zoomies. For the most part, I’m a pretty mellow dude.

“Because life changed so much, I have become somewhat anxious. My person brings me to a family member’s home to get away from the busy times in my home. They have no kids so it’s quiet but I can’t stay there forever. I began having more accidents and licking-my person says I do this from being nervous. I have to wear a belly band now because of it. She has taken me to the vet and even talked to a doggy behaviorist who says my new environment is stressing me. The thought is I may be able to stop wearing this belly band if I can get to a home with someone who has more time for me and can work with me on feeling more secure and happy again.

“During the day I am kept in a big crate when my people are not home. A dog walker comes mid day to take me out for my walk and let me potty.I can manage a few hours between potty breaks. At night I sleep in a big room alone. It would be nice to be closer to my people when it’s bedtime.

“I will bark when someone comes to the door. Don’t all hearing dogs do this? It’s our job, right, to let our humans know we have a visitor? Once said visitor comes inside, once I know they are friendly, I enjoy their attention and affection. I am a friendly fellow.

“I am ready for a rest-of-my-life commitment. I do need someone who can provide regular grooming and vet care so that I can live my best life. In exchange for that, I will be your loyal companion once I am given time to settle in!”
