Dance-A-Thon, Walk-A-Thon, and Read A-Thon are just a few of the “A-Thon” fundraisers people organize to benefit a specific cause, but this week I want you to know about the Shadow Hike-A-Thon organized by Jenn and Jason Sonker in memory of their little dog Shadow.

We often have individuals and groups organize fundraisers for ODH, but this one is not only a bit unusual, but it was wildly successful, raising many thousands of dollars for our dogs.

Jenn says, “My husband and I have hosted an annual Hike-A-Thon Fundraiser, in memory of our little dog “Shadow,” up in Bellingham for a number of years and this year decided that we’d like the proceeds of it to go to Old Dog Haven. It’s the same idea as a Walk-A-Thon, but with hiking instead. In the past, it has benefited the Whatcom Humane Society, and over the last seven years it has raised about $40K (total) for them. Our goal for 2018 is $7,000.”

“This year we joined forces with a local brewery up on Mount Baker Highway (North Fork Brewery) to brew and bottle a featured beer to coincide with our fundraiser. They bottled it and continued to sell it after our event as well, with some of the proceeds being donated to ODH. In the past, all of our hikes took place up in Bellingham, but this year we also incorporated a hike down in Seattle, and had the beer on tap (for sale) at a brewery in Ballard afterwards.”

Thank you Jenn and Jason for choosing Old Dog Haven to be the recipient of funds donated to your Hike-A-Thon in Shadow’s memory. Our dogs, and the families who care for them, very much appreciate your efforts and send a big Paws Up! thank you to you.
