Amy and Penny
Best friends ready for a new home together
Amy and Penny are a bonded pair of adorable chihuahua mixes in need of an adoptive home. Their story is all too familiar: their owner passed away suddenly, and no one in the extended family was able to take them into their homes. A kindhearted neighbor wanted to avoid the best friends being sent to a shelter, so they stepped up to take the girls temporarily.
Penny is 13 years old and weighs 20 pounds. Amy is 12 years old, and she also weighs 20 pounds. Currently, the girls are living with 4 other dogs. We are told they are doing just fine with the dogs, though Amy will understandably growl when another dog tries to take her toy or treat.
It is unknown if the girls have ever lived with a cat. Amy will bark when she sees a cat whereas Penny has no reaction to one. It sounds as though Penny and Amy would be alright in a home with older kids, age 10 and over. Penny is sensitive about how she is picked up so that should be left to an adult.
Vet records report that Penny has a low-grade heart murmur and both girls need dentals. An adopter should be willing and able to provide lifelong veterinary care for each dog as well as good-quality dog food. At this time, the girls can manage stairs, Amy is better at that than Penny. It could be that Penny has arthritis, which is not surprising at her age. She and Penny could benefit from joint support supplements, and perhaps Amy could use something for arthritis pain.
We are told the friends did not get to enjoy walks in their previous home but they are enjoying the daily walks they get to take now! Both do very well on leash. When it’s time to go home, they enjoy getting up on the couch to nap. At night, the lucky girls get to sleep in bed with their kind caregiver. Penny has been known to have an accident in the house when she is not let out in a timely manner. They can manage about 4-5 hours between potty breaks.
Amy gets excited when it is feeding time, she will bark about it. Penny does not bark! Amy loves exploring and the activity she is getting in her temporary home. Penny enjoys physical affection and leans into you when she is being scratched. Both are said to be “super sweet and loving”.
It would be wonderful for these girls to make their way to an adoptive home together. They are quite fortunate their neighbor took them in but it is not a forever home. The hope is soon they will be adopted and begin the next chapter of their lives together.
