Apollo
Solitary and cat-friendly
Meet Apollo! Not only is Apollo stunningly handsome, he is a very good dog. Said to be about 8-9 years old, Apollo is a 70 pound Malamute mix. Apollo has been staying with kind-hearted folks who took him in when his previous owners needed to rehome him suddenly. Their offer to give him a safe place to stay was not permanent, so now Apollo needs an adoptive home where he can remain for the rest of his days.
The belief is that Apollo would do best as an only dog. He has met other dogs and was unsure how to interact. There was no reported aggression but living the solitary life he has led has made it unaware of how to deal with other dogs. His caregiver reports that Apollo does not bark at other dogs when he sees them on walks, he just continues his walk. Our thought is that perhaps an older, mellow, not-overly friendly dog could be a good match for Apollo. Of course someone who is committed and has experience with this is best; we don’t want Apollo’s adoption to “fail”, Apollo lived with cats in his last home, and currently lives with cats. This nice boy is cat-friendly, leaving them alone.
In his current home, Apollo spends his days outside, in a large, securely fenced yard with shade when he needs it. At bedtime, he comes inside to sleep in the laundry room or in a gated area where he can see his people as they sleep. Our hope for him would be that in his new home, Apollo will get to come and go into his house as he wishes. He is a very sweet, social boy who will be happy to spend more time indoors when his people are home. When a dog lives predominantly outdoors, aside from the fact that they can be lonely, changes in health and behavior can be missed.
Apollo loves long walks and tagging along for adventures with his humans. Overall, he is good on leash, though he’s been known to pull a little when he sees a squirrel or rabbit. Apollo has some stiffness in his rear legs when he gets up from sleeping. Ideally, he could start taking a supplement for joint health to help keep him moving so he can continue to keep up with his new family. He has loads of energy and love to share!
As a well-loved, popular dog in the neighborhood, everyone knows Apollo and he is friendly to all: the mailman, garbage man, and delivery drivers, they all stop and give him a treat. Apollo has been great with respectful children, including those who come to visit. He loves to play with them and receive their affection. What a fun dog! Apollo is not much of a barker but will give an awesome wolf howl from time to time.
Thanks to the family that took him in, Apollo has seen a vet for a check-up and vaccines. His adopter should be able to continue with his regular veterinary care and afford good-quality dog food. We have no doubt Apollo will make the care and kindness shown to him so worth it!
