Buddy
Devoted and engaging
Buddy‘s name fits him! He is the epitome of a buddy: a devoted, engaging boy who believes everyone he meets is his friend. Buddy is a 10 year old Maltese. Buddy’s owner recently passed away. Thankfully, extended family have taken him in until the best home can be found for him.
At this time, Buddy is overweight at 15 pounds. His caregiver has been working on getting him out for regular walks and a healthy diet to help him slim down. Buddy thoroughly enjoys his multiple daily walks. He does well on leash, but he will pull in excitement when he sees another dog he could meet or a bird to chase. Buddy likes to chase birds! He does have a collapsing trachea that can become aggravated in hot weather, so he should take morning walks or late evening walks with a harness on (instead of attaching the leash to his collar) before the day becomes too hot in the summer.
Buddy lived with another dog at one point, and we are told he loves meeting new dogs. He is friendly and appropriately social when he is allowed to meet them. Buddy likes cats but will chase them if they run. It sounds as though Buddy would just like to play with one rather than hurt one. A cat who is dog savvy should do just fine with Buddy. Buddy is best with kids aged 10 and over.
The ideal home for Buddy would be one where his people are around more often than not. His owner was an elderly man who was home all of the time. His current caregiver is a retiree who leaves him for short periods of time. He waits by the door for her return. Buddy does well coming along with her in her car when the weather permits. If he found a home with another dog to spend time with, perhaps he would be more content when the humans left. At this time, he can manage a few hours between potty breaks.
Buddy slept in the bed with his owner, and he has been allowed to sleep in the bed with his caregiver. If you don’t allow it, he will bark if you don’t allow him to get in bed with you. Once he is in your bed, he sleeps soundly through the night. He is not a lap dog, but he certainly appreciates time on the couch to sit next to you. Buddy does need to be picked up to get on the couch. One could get him dog stairs to make it easier for him. Carpeted stairs in the house are easier for him to climb, as he can slip on hardwood stairs. He would prefer a lift up the stairs from his human!
Recently Buddy had a mass on his chest checked by his vet. The results came back benign! He will need an adopter that will afford his regular grooming, veterinary care and good quality dog food. We are told Buddy may need a dental soon as well. He is a non-shedding dog.
Buddy does bark at noises, but he listens well when he is told firmly to stop. Buddy is a really good boy who is well-behaved but still playful. He loves his toys, and he will throw them up in the air behind him. He loves to run and gives a big smile when he does so. This joyful boy will make someone very happy. Buddy is ready for his next and final home!
