Choco Lad
Enjoying every day and feeling so much better!
Please note: The dogs in ODH's Final Refuge care are not adoptable due to medical reasons and all are in permanent homes. Your sponsorship supports the veterinary expenses for these dogs - and we thank you!
Choco Lad is a sweet old poodle boy who came into our care in August of 2024. Choco Lad was an owner surrender to a local shelter. Due to his advanced age, being sight-limited and apparent health issues, Choco Lad was not going to be adopted out at the shelter. Staff reached out to Old Dog Haven and thankfully a long time forever foster agreed to take the little dude.
It was obvious that Choco Lad had not had much vet care in a while. Because of the generosity of all who donate to Old Dog Haven, Choco Lad saw a veterinarian shortly after his arrival. Choco Lad looked so defeated in the photo the shelter had sent us originally.
His forever foster got him groomed and not only did we all comment on how handsome he was but how much better he must have felt after getting cleaned up!
Choco has a collapsing trachea which causes a cough. It is a common issue in many small dogs that can make a dog miserable. To help with the cough, 2 different medications were prescribed for him. He will remain on these for life.
His teeth were terrible! 16 rotting teeth were pulled from his mouth when he had his dental. Can you imagine the discomfort Choco Lad had been living with?
Next up Choco Lad saw an animal ophthalmologist. His forever foster tells us he doesn’t see much but to keep his eyes healthy, he receives 2 different eye drops each day. Regular checkups with the ophthalmologist will be necessary to ensure good eye health.
We asked his forever foster mom for an update and here is what she told us:
“Choco Lad is a joy. He loves to snuggle and sleeps next to me or next to his 2 doxie “sisters”. He has his favorite sleeping spots – the couch and an arm chair, he is able to make his way onto both.
“Choco likes to go for walks and ride in the stroller. I think his greatest joy is going for car rides, sleeping in (he is the last one to get up), and treats.”
Our forever foster often shares photos of Choco Lad and it always makes us smile. It makes us so happy that he has a family who loves him in a home he will stay in for always. Old Dog Haven’s mission is to take senior dogs who have been deemed “unadoptable”. Helping these dogs find care, comfort and joy is what we strive for each and every time we welcome a new dog into our rescue. Thanks to everyone who helps make that happen!
