Meet an adorable senior boy named Fletcher, who joined his Old Dog Haven family last September. Like so many of the dogs we take in, he was surrendered to the shelter when his owners could no longer take care of him properly. Poor Fletcher had been struggling with ongoing environmental allergies that caused chronic skin and ear issues, along with a heart murmur. He was underweight and in need of more consistent vet care to manage all of his health problems.

Thanks to your donations, Old Dog Haven can provide Fletcher and all of the 300 senior dogs in our organization with the very best veterinary care. We are so grateful that his forever foster family does an incredible job making sure he has everything he needs to stay comfortable and healthy. He is now on a daily medication for his heart murmur and will be routinely monitored by a vet team to ensure his heart condition remains stable. Because Fletcher has had chronic skin issues, he will remain on a special prescription diet, and continues to receive daily medication and monthly baths to help prevent itching. He has gained weight and his skin looks and feels so much better.

Despite his age, Fletcher is incredibly active for a senior dog. He loves going for walks with his family in the woods and when he gets excited, he runs like a horse with a hilarious wonky gallop. He’s well behaved, intelligent, and is described as a very sweet, and gentle dog. Fletcher has formed a special bond with the youngest son in the family and most nights you will find them sleeping together.

Fletcher has also proven to be quite a character.  At 62 pounds, he truly believes he is a smaller dog and frequently tries to curl up in everyone’s lap. Even though Fletcher is the largest animal of the house, he is referred to as the “baby” of the family. When he first came home, he was terrified of the resident cats and would avoid them at all costs. Now, much to everyone’s surprise, you will find Fletcher with his bestie, Arthur the cat (pictured here), playing chase or napping on the couch together.

Fletcher is also known as the master of a good side eye and will give his foster mom a special look when he is disappointed with her choice of walking trails. He will often sit and refuse to move if he doesn’t agree with where they’re going. Fletcher’s joy comes from playing with his squeaky toys, basking in the sun, and relaxing upstairs in front of the wood fireplace. His forever foster mom shared that they love him dearly and that he was truly meant to be part of their family.

Thanks to your generosity and the dedication of our foster families, senior dogs like Fletcher will always have the care, comfort and joy they deserve for the rest of their lives.
