Jack
A wonderful companion
Adorable Jack‘s life has been turned upside down. Jack is estimated to be between 9-10 years old. He weighs 20 pounds and is a very interesting mixed breed. We are told he is a Chihuahua mix but what’s your guess? So many possibilities!
When his 97-year-old owner could no longer care for him, extended family brought him to Washington from Arizona with the intention of keeping him. While we are grateful for that, we understand that when a dog has been accustomed to a certain way of life in its previous home, major differences can be deal-breakers. That is certainly the case with Jack. He is not happy in his current home, and the family recognizes it would be far kinder for him to find a home that is better suited to him.
Jack is good with small dogs; he has had no issues with them at all. He is currently living with 2 large dogs who make him nervous when they play or become excited. It can be overwhelming! Jack will go after cats if he sees them. Jack has been fine with children who are gentle and respectful.
When one must leave the house, Jack is fine to stay home, managing a few hours between potty breaks. Jack hangs out in his house, happy to be the humans when they are home. At night, Jack sleeps in his bed. Jack DOES bark. He had lived in the country in his previous home. Barking was not an issue for neighbors, and there was not a lot of traffic for him to alert his person to. Jack is a flight risk! Given the chance, he will take off, and he has. He needs a home with a securely fenced yard and a commitment to keep him safely on leash when he is out and about.
Speaking of out and about: Jack did not go for many walks in his last home. His current caretakers say he LOVES a walk or two a day. Jack is making up for his past sedentary life! Jack’s adopter should be prepared to work with him on leash walks. We would recommend always keeping a collar with I.D. on him, as well as a secure harness that fits well to avoid him slipping out of a collar. It will be rewarding to watch Jack learn and thrive with attention and patience.
Jack can manage stairs without issue. He has seen a vet recently for a checkup. The veterinarian did note that Jack needs a dental. Jack’s adopter should be able to provide that for him, as well as regular veterinary care and good quality dog food.
We are told this boy bonds with his people. He wants to belong and stay in a home where he can relax and enjoy his life. Jack proved himself to be a wonderful companion to his former owner. He is ready to be that again, but this time around, he will be happier with a more active lifestyle. Jack sounds like a whole lot of love and fun!
