Kenji and Keiko
Brother and sister ready for a new home
Kenji and Keiko are mixed-breed littermates who recently turned 12 years old. Keiko is the pretty black and white girl estimated to weigh about 65 pounds. Her brother Kenji weighs an estimated 55 pounds. The pair’s lives have been turned upside down recently with a lot of loss. They will soon lose their home and have nowhere to go as the local shelter is full.
Keiko and Kenji lived with another male dog that passed away. Aside from her brother,Keiko enjoys socializing through the fence with her neighbor’s dog. Kenji is less brave around new dogs. In the past he has not appreciated smaller dogs. It sounds as though the ideal home for this pair is one where there are no other dogs in the home. Perhaps they could live with another male dog that is their size, mellow and submissive, allowing Keiko to be “the boss” as she wants to be. They will need an adopter who will do proper introductions and integration.
Kenji LOVES cats! He has always been good with cats, whereas Keiko used to chase the family cats. With age Keiko has decided to leave them alone. Of course a cat should be dog savvy and have a place to be safe while the dogs learn this cat is their friend! The siblings have never been exposed to children. The thought is they could be OK with kind kids aged 13 and older.
Keiko and Kenji have spent a lot of time alone (with their feline family), behaving themselves inside the house. They can manage quite a few hours between potty breaks. They’d love to find a home where they don’t have to wait so long to relieve themselves. Kenji has been the instigator for barking, though both will bark at the appropriate times one would expect a dog to bark.
It has been since 2022 since they saw a vet. Their adopter should be able to get them vetted and afford regular veterinary care and good quality dog food. Both dogs can get upset stomachs from time to time. This may mean a need for a change in diet or another issue that should be addressed. Keiko seems to have some arthritis as she is slow to take stairs. Kenji displays no trouble at this time with stairs.
At this time, Kenji and Keiko don’t go out for many walks. No doubt they’d enjoy more time out! Keiko will pull while on leash whereas Kenji does not. Kenji can go farther on a walk than his sister can. These are VERY SMART dogs! Both dogs love their toys and cuddling with each other or their people. Keiko’s nickname is “Happy” because she’s always smiling. Kenji is sensitive to his person’s emotions, he will come to you and give you a kiss.
Kenji and Keiko are in need of an adoptive home soon. The hope is that they can be adopted together. However, if it is only possible for them to be adopted separately, that will be considered.
