Nic

14-year-old Nic is a border collie who weighs about 40 pounds. Nic lost his home when his owner developed dementia and could no longer care for him. This is the number one reason we hear a senior dog needs a new home. Family has taken Nic in, but it is not a permanent home. Sometimes a family can commit to a dog, and that is a wonderful thing; however, the family’s situation is not conducive to a senior dog’s needs.

Nic lived his former life as an only dog. In his current home, he is living with a toy poodle but they do not interact with each other. True to his breed Nic will display herding instinct. Nic was trained to herd. We have been told he has been fine with the family’s kids. However, you never know when his herding instinct may kick in. Some herding dogs will try to herd small children. Nic has not lived with cats. He has shown no reaction to cats he has come across.

Age has not slowed Nic down much! He loves to chase balls, play tug rope and has been known to steal other dogs’ toys at the dog park. Nic is excellent on leash and should be taken for frequent walks. Stairs are difficult for him due to presumed hip arthritis. Keeping Nic moving, joint support and perhaps an anti-inflammatory could relieve any discomfort Nic may have. Dogs are incredibly stoic and adapt to pain, but they should not have to.

Nic is in need of a home where he can get out to potty when he needs to. He was accustomed to a home where his person was home. It is a big adjustment to go to a home where the people are gone all day. A home with a fenced yard for him to go out into to roam or just hang out would make Nic very happy. Nic will bark when he’s shut in the house for too long.

As we’d expect for a 14-year-old, Nic’s vision and hearing are not as sharp as they once were. His family has taken him in for a recent vet check-up, and he is doing well medically for a dog his age. An adopter should be able to commit to Nic’s veterinary care, good-quality dog food, and possibly grooming.

It would be wonderful to find this nice boy a home that is more senior dog-friendly. Nic is described as a gentle, super sweet, loving dog who loves affection, even from strangers. He is especially fond of whoever feeds him- smart fellow!
