Stella arrived at our house after a month of being in a shelter. We think she is some sort of Yorkie or mixed breed.

I think her person did not want to let her go but couldn’t commit to her care. We were told she had been picked up for neglect. She is 14. Her eyes were infected and mucky (stuck shut) , she might lose one of them, she had live fleas, matted hair, possibly wasn’t spayed, had a mammary tumor, a cough that might be a collapsed trachea and, of course, needed a dental. By the time we got her, she had been shaved, given flea medicine and was fed (this girl is serious about food!).

Stella has adapted well to her new life. We got her the end of August. Besides being serious about food, Stella needed to see my husband or me at all times. If she could not, she would howl!

Being at least part Yorkie, she can make a lot of noise! The howling went on for almost a month. Fortunately we are retired so we are here a lot. Stella also seemed to forget her potty training but that seems to be coming back.

Stella has now been spayed. It was determined the tumor is benign. Her health is improving and her hair is growing back. Medications have seriously alleviated her cough but it is still an issue for her. She still wants her people around, which includes our daughter and her dog, Harlow, but now she barks instead of howls, which is an improvement! She is losing her hearing and sight and may still lose one eye, but she has figured out when meal time is (after a visit to the yard) and for that, she romps like a puppy and is in a big hurry to get back in the house.

I am so grateful that Stella was rescued by ODH. Before, she didn’t really have much hope. Now, she brings a lot to our family and should have a very happy end of life. Thank you ODH donors for your support for her!
