Zeus came to Old Dog Haven after he was confiscated by animal control. He had been found shut indoors in a cage with no food, water, or access to outside. He was suffering from a skin issue that, although treatable, had been ignored until he had lost all the fur on his hind end, and his vet mentioned on intake that his teeth looked like he had been chewing on metal cage bars.

Zeus got put on antibiotics and daily medicated baths for his skin issue, which thankfully responded quickly, and then his fur grew back, shiny and new!

He spent the first few days here a little bit shocked to find himself with so much freedom, including a dog door and almost an acre to roam. And regular meals! That was his favorite. He settled in pretty quickly after that, and decided that I was his person, and that he was a 75 pound lap dog. As he got more comfortable, his goofy, puppy side came out – he’s like a forever puppy, who wants to be right with me all the time. We decided his full name was Zeussifer Kevin, and made sure he was well-stocked with toys. I have never had such a velcro dog, but he’s so joyful about everything: “Mom, watch me pick an apple off this tree!” “Mom, watch me roll on my back through the grass!” “Look, Mom, I can play ball all by myself!” And he does play ball by himself sometimes, bouncing it and chasing after it. Or he plays with our other ODH dogs, Niño and Cooper, and he adores our resident dog, Cherry. He’s terrified of the cat, however.

Zeus is such a Dog, with a capital “D” and he has such sweetly goofy zest for life. He’s such a testament to the resilient spirits of animals. We can’t picture life without him.
