Joey and Reggie
Very loving and cuddly pair!
Joey and Reggie are best buddies, hoping they can find an adoptive home where they can remain together. Joey is a 9-year-old, 13-pound Chihuahua/Terrier mix. Reggie is an 8 year old 11 pound, Chihuahua/Cavalier mix. We can’t tell much of a difference; they look like they could be littermates, but they are not! The friends were adopted 4 years apart. They met and bonded, which is always a wonderful thing to see.
Currently, the boys live without any other dogs. We are told that Joey and Reggie are usually fine with other dogs. Of the pair, Reggie can be a little more particular about interactions with other dogs. He does not always like big dogs, and he can be territorial. Joey takes a more laid-back approach towards other dogs. It sounds as though they could join a home with a mature dog who is not a big dog. Joey and Reggie have lived with cats.
What the boys need is a home without children. Reggie is stressed by the unpredictable movements of the young children in his home. Being cornered by a child who doesn’t understand boundaries can cause even the best-behaved dog to react. We find this behavior to be quite common in senior dogs. In fact, it is one of the most common reasons a senior dog must be rehomed. While Joey has been tolerant, his owners think it is best to rehome them both together because of their strong bond with each other.
After they settle into their new home, these friends can stay alone in their home with each other as company without issue. They do need a potty break every 4-6 hours. The pair will hang out on the couch or in the yard with their humans when they are home. We are told they both bark to alert when someone has arrived at their home. It is best to keep them crated when strangers come over, as Joey gets concerned and protective of his home.
Reggie and Joey love long walks. They are very good on leash, but they are leash reactive when they see other dogs. Another very common occurrence in dogs! One should be able to manage walking a pair of dogs together and know how to handle 2 barking, pulling dogs when they spot another dog. These are young, spry seniors who can manage stairs. Reggie is bouncy and jumpy when he is about to get a treat, toy or food. He also watches T.V. and reacts to the animals on screen. As always, we must remember that adopting these friends means one must have the ability to provide good-quality dog food and regular veterinary care.
These boys are described as being very loving and cuddly. They sleep in their humans’ bed at night under the covers. It did take time for Joey and Reggie to get to the point they are at with their people. Each came with particular behaviors that have been worked on and managed around. This means they will once again need to adapt and learn to trust new people. It can be done! Joey and Reggie need a dog-savvy home with someone who is committed to them and will respect their boundaries. Earning the trust, love, and loyalty of Reggie and Joey will mean devoted companionship for what we hope is many years ahead of them.
