Alfred

Alfred is a 14-year-old terrier mix who ended up in a shelter last month when his owner could no longer care for him after their home was affected by recent flooding. When he arrived, he looked like a dog that desperately needed help. His fur was long and dirty, and he had cataracts in both eyes and a low-grade heart murmur. He also had chronic diarrhea, and his mouth was an absolute mess. He had a major underbite and a significant infection that smelled awful.  Shelter staff asked if we could help this friendly guy find a forever family and we did! Alfred is now safe in his Old Dog Haven permanent foster home, where he joins four other dogs and a cat. Despite his medical issues, his foster mom told us, “We’re pretty obsessed with him.  He’s very goofy, likes to dance and tap his feet when he’s excited. He’s really playful, very sweet and loves giving kisses. If he’s in a lap, he’s the happiest boy!”

Alfred clearly hadn’t received much veterinary care in his previous life but he was soon able to see a vet who prescribed special prescription food for his gastrointestinal issues and scheduled him for a dental. Because of his heart murmur, he first had to undergo an echocardiogram to ensure his heart was stable enough to tolerate the anesthesia required for his dental surgery. During the procedure, the veterinary team discovered a severe infection in both his upper and lower jaws, and it was decided that all of his teeth had to be extracted. He is now recovering at home and starting to feel better every day. He is playing more and having the time of his life with his new pack. He spends much of the day up on the couch or a cozy bed with new friends. His favorite person is his forever foster mom, and he follows her everywhere she goes.
