Allie
Beautiful and friendly
What a beauty Allie is! Her people tell us that Allie is a 12 year old collie-terrier-lab mix. She weighs 45 pounds- not a big dog nor a small dog. Allie will be “just right” for someone!
While Allie has never lived with another dog, she has stayed with family friends who have dogs while her family has gone on vacations. Allie is appropriately social with other dogs as long as she is not on leash. When she’s leashed up, she believes she should “protect” her person by growling. This is a common behavior in many dogs. Proper introductions are important when trying to determine if a “new” dog can join a family with other dogs.
Allie currently lives with a cat. She does OK with the kitty, but she reportedly gets excited around the cat sometimes. Any adoptive home with a cat should be certain that their cat is dog savvy and has a safe place to go when Allie gets excited about them. Allie has been around children aged 5 and up and has done very well with all of them. She is a gentle and friendly girl who could join a family with children who have been taught to be kind and respectful of animals.
Days are usually spent at home with her person, but Allie has been able to stay alone as needed without an issue. She needs a potty break every 4 hours; sometimes she can manage longer, but she should not have to. Allie has lived with the same family all of her life. Senior dogs can adapt to big changes when they are given time to acclimate and shown compassion and understanding with their move.
Allie will let you know when an unknown car arrives and when there is someone knocking at the door. She is a good alert dog. Allie enjoys her daily walks. Like almost every dog, Allie uses her walks to sniff, and one should allow her to have time to do so. Remember that walks are a dog’s time to explore the world, and it is so good for their mental, emotional, and physical health. We are told Allie can pull while on leash; one should be able to manage her size and strength.
At this time, Allie can still manage stairs. We are told she has arthritis and that it is apparent in her right front leg. Allie takes a daily joint supplement and that should continue. She may benefit from more aid for her arthritis as she continues to age. There are so many options to help keep a dog comfortable. Allie’s hearing is “exceptional”, but her eyesight is not as sharp. Regular veterinary care and good-quality dog food is imperative to maintaining Allie’s health.
This truly lovely, unique-looking girl is described as being “very, very gentle”. She has been a wonderful companion and friend. Allie loves to cuddle, and she is very affectionate. She sounds like she will make a perfect addition to almost any home.
