Meet Anwen, a tiny 6 lb. Pomeranian, who was taken to the shelter after she was found wandering alone, in distress and very sick. The shelter did what they could to care for her and reached out to Old Dog Haven to find her a permanent home and the urgent medical care she needed. They told us her teeth were in terrible shape, and she had a possible tooth root abscess breaking through her cheekbone. We were grateful when one of our experienced foster families stepped up without hesitation to welcome her into their home.

At her intake exam, she was diagnosed with severe periodontal disease, which is a very advanced, painful condition where over half of the gums and bone that support the teeth have been destroyed due to long-term plaque and tartar buildup. When left untreated, it can cause inflammation, bone loss, infection, and a great deal of pain and discomfort for a dog. Because of Anwen’s small size, her jaw was especially fragile, putting her at serious risk of a fracture during the procedure. It was recommended that she have this complicated surgery performed by a skilled veterinary dental specialist. The vet team was able to successfully remove 27 of her 29 remaining teeth that day.  We were relieved to know this sweet girl was finally out of the constant pain she had lived with for so long.

Her foster mom told us, “Before surgery, Anwen wouldn’t let anyone near her face or mouth and even gentle pats on her head were too painful for her. Now that she’s healed, she allows head rubs and even lets me touch her mouth, a sure sign of the relief and comfort she’s finally feeling. She’s happier, spunkier, and more affectionate than ever! I am so grateful to the Maranda Fund donors, whose generosity has made her transformation possible and has given her a pain-free life filled with endless happiness.”

After almost 6 months post-surgery, we are happy to report that Anwen is feeling great and fits in perfectly with her new foster brothers and sisters. She’s always the first in the house to wake up, silly and full of energy. She loves chasing and playfully barking at her foster sister, Maddy Mae, taking short walks, and then curling up for afternoon naps on the living room couch alongside one of the resident cats. Her mom says Anwen is such a fun dog to live with and she feels very lucky to have been chosen as her forever foster home.
