Mildred

Mildred was surrendered to a shelter with significant health issues and no hope of adoption. In addition to multiple mammary masses, she had not been spayed and had a hernia that needed to be repaired.

Once safe in her Old Dog Haven permanent foster home, a vet exam and further diagnostic testing revealed that Mildred was facing a more serious situation, an inguinal hernia which was filled with fluid, fat, and half her uterus. This is a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate surgery because of the potential risk of organ damage to a dog.

The surgery was a success, and the doctor was able to spay her and remove the mammary masses, which turned out to be benign. Her hernia was closed, and she stayed overnight at the hospital. Her foster mom said she was an excellent patient, even though she was on exercise restriction while her incision healed. She has now fully recovered and is loving life in her new home. She is described as a very opinionated little lady and fiercely loving.

Her foster mom tells us, “Her favorite activity is barking through the fence with the Basset Hound next door. She’s a very commanding little girl- despite being the smallest, she already runs the house. She is my velcro dog and she must be near or on me at all times. When I talk to the other animals, she makes a funny little grumble like she’s the only one I should be talking to. At bedtime, she burrows under the blankets with Sasha, her foster sister, usually with just the tip of her nose sticking out. While all food is desirable, she really loves peas- to the point that she steals them from the other dogs if given the opportunity.”

Old Dog Haven and her forever foster family will make sure Mildred will now only know love, comfort and care for the rest of her days.
