Charles
Amazing transformation
“There are no photos to convey the pain he was in.” This is what we were told by Old Dog Haven’s co-founder and director of veterinary services, Judith Piper. The pictures say it all. This sad boy had been suffering for a long time and was a “neglected mess.” Charles desperately needed help and a safe place to heal.
Charles made his way from a local shelter to one of our experienced, caring and very loving Old Dog Haven homes. His hair was matted and he had crusty scabs all over his body. His foster mom took three days to trim the matted hair off him and the vet prescribed a dermatological shampoo to treat his painful skin. His skin was in such bad shape that no one could touch him or pick him up. His lymph nodes were enlarged, he had a low grade heart murmur and infections in both ears. He was seen by a dermatologist and was put on pain medication and steroids to help clear up his skin. He was also seen by an ophthalmologist who prescribed eye drops for his dry eye and cataracts.
Charles’ forever foster told us this:
“When Charles arrived, I could hardly pick him up, his skin was so painful. Thanks to Old Dog Haven he has had regular vet care and his skin no longer cracks and bleeds. His hair is growing back. He is bright and interested in life.”
Charles is feeling so much better and finally enjoying himself in his forever home. As you can see his hair has grown in beautifully and he looks like a different dog. His foster mom says he is a very sweet dog and she is happy to see him playing with his favorite ball or squeaky toy. He loves to be with his foster brothers and sisters and many days you will find him napping in front of the fire.
Charles is just one incredible example of the transformations that happen when neglected old dogs get the care and love they need. We are so happy for Charles!
Update: Little Charles was with his fosters for 2 years before developing Cushings. He is sorely missed by his family and everyone who loved him.
