Darla and Riley
Easygoing, happy dogs
Darla and Riley are lifelong friends who need to find a home as soon as possible. The pair were left behind with a caregiver for what was supposed to be a few months. Sadly, their former owner has decided not to come back for them. The hope is that Riley and Darla can remain together.
12 year old Darla is the white and brown heeler mix who weighs 51 pounds. Riley is about 10 years old; she is a mixed breed who weighs about 50 pounds. These besties have never lived with other dogs, but they are fine when meeting new dogs. The pair have lived with a cat. While they were interested in the cat, they never bothered it. Both dogs are great with children of all ages. Of course, we’d suggest a home with kids who are old enough to be gentle and respectful of them.
The nice thing about giving a bonded pair a home is that settling into a new home can be made easier because they have their familiar friend. Both dogs have done well staying inside their home, managing a few hours before they need a potty break. Riley enjoys hanging out on the couch; Darla will curl up in her dog bed. Darla likes to share the bed with her humans when she is allowed to do so. Riley is hysterical! She loves to sleep in the most odd position, on her back with her legs up in the air. Both dogs will bark, Riley more than Darla as she is deaf. But we are told their barking combined is still minimal.
These besties need an adopter who is willing and able to give them the care they need and deserve. Veterinary care is important as is good quality dog food. Both girls are spayed (we do not post intact dogs for adoption). However, Darla has a mammary tumor; it should be addressed by her adopter. Ideally, that should be removed, and perhaps at the same time, she can have the dental care she needs. At this time, both dogs can manage stairs. No arthritis is observed, but we would recommend a joint supplement for both, especially for Darla, who is older than Riley.
Time for walks has not been available recently, but we hope that will change for them with adoption. Each girl is said to be great on leash, a bonus! These sound like pretty easygoing, happy dogs. Darla is super cuddly and attentive to her people; Riley is funny and talkative.
Providing a home to a bonded pair is so rewarding!
