This big boy’s name is Heimo. He is a 10-year-old, 130-pound German Shepherd/ Rottweiler mix. Heimo was found wandering the streets about 4 years ago. His people estimate he is between 10 and 11 years old.

Heimo has lived with quite a few dogs as his owners previously fostered puppies. Because he is older now and has arthritis, Heimo will do best in a home with dogs that match his age and low energy. He does best with company, so a friendly dog could help him acclimate to a new home, especially when the humans have to leave the house. Cats excite Heimo; he’s a bit too interested in them, so a cat-free home would be best for Heimo. Heimo has done wonderfully with children. However, he will appreciate a home with older kids who are gentle and respectful. Just because a dog tolerates rough behavior does not mean they like it!

It sounds like Heimo would greatly benefit from relief for his arthritis. His people state he is stiff and tender around his hips. There is help for that. Heimo is due for a senior vet exam, and we’d bet he could get help that will provide Heimo with the comfort he deserves. He may benefit from weight loss as well. We are told he is not very active anymore and that sometimes he can’t get out in time to potty when he needs to. Heimo needs a home without stairs and one where he can access getting outside with ease. A home where he can go out about every 4 hours during the day to relieve himself.

Because he’s a large dog, one must be able to manage his size and strength when he’s on leash. He can get excited when he’s on a walk and sees another dog. In the past his people used a Gentle Leader harness to help control his pull. Described as being a “giant couch potato”, with gentle exercise and help for his joints, we bet he will enjoy getting out and up to stretch his legs more often.

Heimo is a good alert dog, barking to let you know when someone is outside. He will bark in excitement over visitors but stop once he is told to. Heimo is a sweet, friendly companion dog who has a “calm presence”. We think Heimo sounds like such a good boy. He is ready to make someone the new best friend they have been looking for!
