Say hello to Jack! Jack is an 11-year-old Shih Tzu/Pomeranian mix who weighs a little over 16 pounds. Jack’s owner passed away in December of last year. Family members took him in to keep him out of the shelter and their hope was to keep him. However, it has become obvious that their busy lifestyle is far too different than what he was accustomed to. The hope is that a quiet, low-traffic home with someone home often can be found. This cutie is going to make a great companion to someone!

Currently, Jack lives with a puppy. Jack has been a very good boy with this pup, but the belief is that he would rather be the only dog. Perhaps he could be OK with another dog closer to his age with proper introductions. He can be possessive of his toys, and he does bark at dogs he does not know. His family states they have never seen him around a cat, so they are unsure if he could live with one. Jack has done wonderfully with the 9-year-old child in the home, even sleeping under her bed at night sometimes. Jack would not appreciate a home with young children.

The coming and going of other people and other dogs to his current home has caused Jack to be anxious. To help, he was prescribed Prozac, which has helped. The goal is to eventually wean him off of that once he finds a home that is similar to his former home. Jack does bark, in many instances, so it will be very important that he finds a home where a barking dog does not cause a problem.

A home with someone who is retired or works from home would make Jack happier. He does get anxious when he is left alone. With Jack around, one will never feel alone! He likes to sit at his person’s feet for hours or even better, be held like a baby. At night, he loves to sleep next to his person in bed. He has bonded with the woman in his home; his former owner was also a woman.

Jack needs frequent potty breaks. A routine to get out for regular potty breaks is a must, or he will have accidents. Jack drinks a lot of water. Some people withhold water to avoid accidents. We firmly believe doing so is detrimental to a dog. Jack will need someone who can provide for his veterinary care, regular grooming and good quality food. We are told Jack needs a dental. One should plan for this when adopting Jack. Jack has a mild heart murmur. That is not causing any problem for him at this time and it may never! However, a heart murmur should always be monitored by a vet for changes.

Jack has excellent leash skills and enjoys short walks throughout the day. This and a good diet have helped Jack shed some of the weight he came with. Getting Jack to his ideal weight will help him live his best life. It is so much fun to watch a senior dog play with toys, and Jack loves his. He sounds like a fun, loving, loyal dog. Jack is a sensitive fellow. His family has done their best to love and care for him, but they recognize he would thrive in a calm home. A dog like Jack could complete someone’s life!
