Nugget
Sassy little love!
Please note: The dogs in ODH's Final Refuge care are not adoptable due to medical reasons and all are in permanent homes. Your sponsorship supports the veterinary expenses for these dogs - and we thank you!
We introduce you to a pint-sized dynamo named Nugget, who is now enjoying unconditional love, kindness and lots of attention in his Old Dog Haven forever home.
Earlier this year, Nugget (short for Chicken Nugget), a 14-year-old Miniature Pinscher mix, was found running down the street in a very busy part of town and brought to a local shelter. The shelter was able to locate his owner, but no one ever came to claim him and shelter staff reached out to Old Dog Haven. His foster mom says he arrived very underweight, with itchy skin and missing most of his teeth. His intake vet exam revealed he also had a significant grade 3 heart murmur and x-rays showed he was living with chronic intervertebral disc disease in his spine. Your generous donations pay for the medical treatment old dogs like Nugget need to manage their ongoing medical issues and help them feel comfortable in their daily lives. Nugget received vaccinations, diagnostic bloodwork and was prescribed medication to help improve his mobility. The vet referred him to a cardiologist who performed an echocardiogram to check the condition of his heart and monitor him for future changes to his health.
Nugget’s foster mom shares an update on how he has settled into his new life.
“We were overjoyed to welcome Nugget into our home and give him the medical care and stability he desperately needed. We quickly found ourselves in love with this sassy little fellow! Nugget looks like a tiny deer, with adorably oversized ears, long lean legs and a tongue that tends to hang out on one side of his mouth. He was a bit timid when he first arrived but quickly realized he was in a safe space with people who wanted to help him. He now takes comfort in the simple things at home and loves to nap while sitting next to me under a warm electric blanket. Many days I find him perched on the back of the living room couch, watching people and dogs passing by on the street. He fancies himself quite the guard dog and likes to bark when he sees potential danger from a squirrel, the mailman, or anyone walking by. When he is not protecting his home, he is ready to patrol the neighborhood on his daily walks with his Old Dog Haven sister, Lola. He loves to come back home and curl up in his favorite bean bag chair in front of the warm furnace vent and take a nap It brings me great joy to see how happy he is now and to know he will never lose his home again. He will always have the vet care he needs, and the love every old dog deserves!”
Thank you to our donors and supporters who make it possible for old dogs like Nugget to find care, comfort, and joy at the end of their lives.
