Please note: The dogs in ODH's Final Refuge care are not adoptable due to medical reasons and all are in permanent homes. Your sponsorship supports the veterinary expenses for these dogs - and we thank you!

Gus, affectionately called Gussy, came to me from the shelter, where staff believed he would need to lose one, and possibly both, of his eyes. Once he was in my care, we took him to the vet right away due to the clear discomfort he was experiencing. He was diagnosed with buphthalmia and a stromal corneal ulcer in his blind eye, which required enucleation, as well as a corneal ulcer and keratitis in the eye we hoped to save. The remaining eye is being treated with three prescription drops twice a day.

Because of the severity of his condition, the ophthalmologist saw him immediately, on a non-clinic day, no less. After the exam, they kept him for surgery, and he came home later that afternoon. He handled the entire process like a champ and acted as though nothing had happened, which showed just how much relief the surgery brought him.

Gus settled into my home quickly. At first, he was a bit too enthusiastic about the cats and scared them off, but one of them has since taught him how to be calm and now they’re friends. He’s still working on winning over the other cat, but his excitement and whining keep her at a distance for now. Gus and one of my other Old Dog Haven foster dogs hit it off immediately and love playing together.

From day one, he attached himself to me. If I’m sitting, he has to be on me or beside me; if I’m up, he follows or waits patiently for me to return. He has been an absolute joy to know and love. His very favorite thing to do is sleep and he excels at it!

I’m incredibly grateful to ODH and all the sponsors whose support made his enucleation possible and relieved him of so much pain.
