Shooter is a 17-year-old Yorkshire Terrier who arrived to Old Dog Haven at the age of 16, very thin and with signs of pancreatitis and an ear infection. He had been a devoted companion to his first owner until she passed away last fall. Knowing Shooter needed a full-time lap and a person in need of his unique therapeutic talent, the family contacted Old Dog Haven.  An experienced foster family had just lost their beloved Old Dog Haven foster dog and they had a lap that was too empty.  When Shooter became available, they knew he would be the perfect dog for their family!

Shooter’s new mom had Alzheimer’s Dementia and had a very hard time communicating yet Shooter always knew what she was saying, and she understood him too.  Shooter seemed to sense how lost she felt so he was always by her side. A constant comfort to her, he never left her and took her care and companionship very seriously.

Shooter gets along very well with the four other Old Dog Haven foster dogs in the house.  Shooter’s favorite dog pal is a final refuge dog, Prince, a 15-year-old ShihTzu.  They romp in the yard together, many times forgetting that they are two “old guys”. Then they would hop up in their mom’s lap and nap together.

Shooter is a delightful and loving little man who has settled into his new home easily. Shooter was very devoted to his mom and he has brought such joy and purpose into her life as she traveled in her Alzheimer’s journey. Sadly, Shooter’s mom passed away recently. In her final weeks, Shooter and Prince were her constant companions, always on her lap or nearby. They brought so much love to each other and showed how much value old dogs bring to their families. The remaining family feels that the dogs were such a remarkable gift and can’t imagine life without them.
