Ginger
Sweet and amazing gentle giant
Ginger is a lovely Pyrenees/Golden mix who is almost 12 years old. At her last checkup almost a year ago, Ginger’s weight was 94 pounds. She does appear to be overweight in her photos. Ginger’s lifelong owner has moved to a senior care facility. He is no longer able to care for his beloved dog. Extended family has been caring for Ginger, but they cannot do so much longer. She sounds like an amazing dog, a gentle giant who will make a loving new forever family member.
Ginger was an only dog all of her life. Currently, Ginger is living with a small dog, and she is doing well with that. It is reported that Ginger is appropriately social when meeting others on walks. No one knows how Ginger would react to a cat. She is said to be very calm and non-reactive, so it could be that Ginger could live with a dog-savvy cat. This sweetie has been good with kids of all ages. Because of her size and age, we recommend that Ginger be adopted to families with children at least aged 6 and over.
We are told that Ginger can still manage stairs; she does so but slowly. A home where she won’t have to climb many stairs would be kindest for her. We would assume a dog her age has arthritis. She will not be carried up and down stairs easily!
Ginger’s pace for walks is slow. She is said to do well on leash. Getting her out for regular short walks and time outside in a fenced yard will make Ginger happy. She loves being brushed and spending time out in the sun.
When one must leave the house, Ginger is fine to stay alone. She can manage a few hours between potty breaks. Ginger is accustomed to having access to a yard to get out into. This good girl rarely barks. She is mellow and well-behaved, comfortable with large groups of people or spending time alone, relaxing.
An adopter should be willing and able to provide Ginger with regular veterinary care. It is unknown if she has ever had a full senior exam with lab work and a urinalysis. We would recommend this be done for Ginger upon adoption. A joint supplement could help with her presumed arthritis. Certainly, anyone who adopts a senior dog will want to keep them as comfortable. Quality of life is so important.
Ginger’s family cannot keep her much longer. We hope to help her find the adoptive home she needs soon. If you cannot adopt Ginger, maybe you know someone who can?
