Gizzmo

8-year-old Gizzmo is a 24-pound Wire Fox Terrier. He is described as a wonderful playmate, housemate, and companion. Gizzmo loves to play and jumps like a gazelle. He is a friendly boy who welcomes visitors with affection. Gizzmo loves car rides and snuggles–resting his head on your shoulder.

Gizzmo needs a new home because he is not well suited to apartment living. The halls are busy with other people and their dogs. A home without so much traffic outside would be best for Gizzmo. He will bark when he is on leash and sees another dog, but aside from that if it’s quiet outside, he is quiet in the house.

While he has never lived with other dogs, Gizzmo has done well around dogs his size once he has time to get acquainted. His rescuers believe unless an adoptive home with someone who has a lot of dog experience can be found, he should probably be an only pet. This means no cats too. Gizzmo has no experience with children. The rescue will not place dogs in a home with kids under 6 if at all. Some dogs just don’t mesh well with kids. His rescuers report he will resource guard (but never bite!) food or items like a bone or his Kong.

Gizzmo would be happiest in a home with an active retiree or someone who works from home. His potty schedule is pretty reliable but if he needs to go before his usual time, he will jump up and put a paw on you, staring intently to let you know he needs to go out. When he is left alone, he can manage quite a while before needing a potty break. In his current home, he is taking medication for anxiety. This dear boy will self-soothe when he’s left alone, finding a place to hide until you return. It is healthy for a dog to be able to be left alone. No one can be home 24/7! To us, it sounds as though Gizzmo needs a compassionate, patient human who will understand his sensitive nature. Dogs like Gizzmo can be the most loving and rewarding pals when given time to settle in and feel secure. When he has had to be boarded at another person’s home, he has done well. So Gizzmo can adapt! But we hope he only has one more move; our goal is to help Gizzmo find his true forever home.

Someone will be adopting a very fun dog when they adopt Gizzmo! He knows many commands and tricks, including twirling on his 2 feet when you make a circle motion with a treat. He plays games of “find it” in the house and enjoys puzzles to find his treats. This is a very active boy who will thrive in a home where he gets a lot of exercise. He’s a young senior, after all. Gizzmo is accustomed to two 20-minute walks a day. Gizzmo has been brought along on short leashed hikes from time to time and done well. When he is out and about, he is reactive to other dogs. His people bring treats along to distract him. Time for training could help and we bet Gizzmo could learn so much, given how smart he is and how much he wants to please his people.

Gizzmo’s rescuers note he needs a dental, and they will cover the cost of that once an adopter is found. He was born with an extra toe and nail on the top of one of his front feet. This is hardly seen and causes no problem. Additionally, they state that Gizzmo has a small bulge near his belly button (umbilical hernia) that he has had from birth. It has not gotten larger or bothered him in these many years. As with every dog we post, we note that Gizzmo’s adopter should be able to afford his lifelong veterinary care, good quality dog food and in his case, grooming.
