Lexi found her way to her Old Dog Haven foster home after she had been adopted from a local shelter. Her new adopter quickly discovered they were severely allergic to her fur and would not be able to keep her so they turned to Old Dog Haven to help find a permanent home.

We were thrilled when a longtime Old Dog Haven foster stepped up and gladly welcomed little Lexi into their pack. Lexi had a number of medical issues that needed attention. She had limited vision, didn’t hear very well, and like so many of the old dogs we take in, her teeth were in terrible shape. She also struggled with dry eye and multiple urinary tract infections.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Lexi was able to receive the vet care she needed. She underwent an extensive dental surgery where there were concerns that parts of her gums might not heal properly. Luckily, the surgery was a huge success, leaving Miss Lexi with a unique and adorable crooked smile! She is also now on a daily medicated eye drop for her dry eye and supplements to keep her GI upset in check.

Despite all the changes Lexi has been through recently, she has adjusted well and continues to be an energetic bundle of pure joy. She has a spunky, take-charge attitude and her foster mom told us, “She has the typical dachshund bravado mixed with the intellect of a poodle. She loves to run and play, and her very favorite toy is her bouncy ball. She can’t see too well, so if the ball is a couple of feet away, she can’t tell where it went, but she still jumps up and down as if she has caught it anyway! If she does get the ball when we’re outside, she usually makes me chase her and then runs inside with it. She has a wonderful sense of humor and keeps me laughing constantly. When I scratch her chest, her right front paw goes up in the air while her tail furiously wags. At night, she is the dog that gets to sleep on the pillow next to me. If any other dog tries to take over her spot, she will just annoy them until they move. She never gets aggressive, but she just irritates them until they have had it. She is the queen of the house!”

Even though Lexi is the boss, she also has a sweet side. When her foster brother, George, didn’t feel well, she would often go check on him to see if he was okay. She also loves to cuddle up in soft, cozy beds with George or her other foster sister, Myrtle, and nap the day away. Lexi loves her new family and we are so happy that she will never lose her home ever again.
