Lucas came to us as an emergency placement to avoid going to a shelter when his longtime owner passed away.  He seemed shut down and perhaps overwhelmed by all the changes.  During his first few days with us, he just slept in the bedroom and barely interacted except to eat and go to the bathroom.  After a few days of gentle words and loving touch, he began to wag his tail when we came to him and soon began to greet us.  The sparkle started to return to his eyes.

When his transporter came to see him after a few months, she said she could hardly believe he was the same dog as he greeted her with tail wags and that “golden” smile.

He is such a sensitive soul.  I honestly don’t think he could have survived a stay in the shelter and I am forever grateful that Old Dog Haven sent him to us to avoid that alternative.  Old Dog Haven is providing him with ongoing medical care for arthritis and medications for his liver function.

Lucas has settled into his new home and family.  His silly quirks (his “dance” at the stairs before he comes up; barking at the waterdish before he drinks) have brought us laughter. His sweet personality has brought much joy to our home.  I can’t thank ODH enough for giving him a second chance for a new life and for letting that life be with us.

Update:  After about a year and a half of bringing joy to his new home and enjoying all the love and care, Lucas’s health failed him and his family had to say goodbye.  This loving boy will live on in their hearts and be greatly missed.  We are so grateful that this sensitive fellow had a caring last chapter.
