Ruger
Very happy in his new home

Ruger, an adorable chiweenie (dachshund/chihuahua) was an owner surrender to a local shelter. The shelter told us he had a mild heart murmur, a luxating patella and diagnosed with intervertebral disc disease – the discs are compressing which causes nerves to be pinched, pain and eventually difficulty using the hind legs. It is very common in dachshunds.
We sent out an urgent plea to help Ruger and a new Old Dog Haven foster family volunteered to open their home to him. Ruger was soon able to receive a comprehensive exam and then was referred to a cardiologist to check on his heart murmur. Since he is not exhibiting any pain or symptoms at this time, he will be monitored for any medical changes and then treated.
His foster home has fallen madly in love with this sweet senior boy and they share with us how excited they are that Ruger is a permanent member of their family.
“We consider Ruger our Mary Poppins dog – “practically perfect in every way”. He is such a wonderful dog. My 90-year-old mom loves him and says he is the best dog yet. We feel so lucky to have him in our family. He settled in quickly and I’m seeing more of his personality come out as he becomes more comfortable. He will squeal if I stop petting him before he is ready. He loves going on walks and carefully sniffs everything on the way out but wants to sprint home on the way back. I’m not a morning person but I look forward to waking up just so I can see him. He does the cutest thing right before he goes out for a walk. He always does a downward dog and then stretches out his back legs. He is very slow when heading away from the house, sniffing everything. On the way back home though, he likes to go full speed even though he has one back leg that doesn’t always want to cooperate so he kind of does a bunny hop. There was a big hole left when I lost my 17+ year-old dachshunds during the past year and this little guy managed to fill it all by himself.”
We are so grateful this lucky boy has finally found himself the most loving and dedicated family that will provide him with everything he needs to live his best life!
