Vader‘s lifelong owner reached out to Old Dog Haven for help when they had to relocate and couldn’t bring Vader along. When we received the photos of Vader, we knew we had to get him into one of our permanent foster homes as soon as possible. A long-time foster family put their hands up for this sweet boy, and we knew his life was about to become awesome and so much more comfortable.
Aside from long-term skin issues that needed to be addressed, Vader was overweight, arthritic and missing most of his hair. His skin was yeasty, itchy, and inflamed. Under the guidance of one of our wonderful vets and an animal dermatologist, his incredibly dedicated foster mom has helped transform Vader into a new dog. He has had weekly medicated baths, medicated spray and foam, along with a strict hydrolyzed diet to start healing his skin.
Over the course of his life, Vader had not had access to consistent vet care and suffered from multiple ear infections and chronic dry eye. He now receives daily eye drops, and his ear infections have resolved and he is feeling so much better. During a recent vet appointment, vets tested a very large mass on his back right paw and a smaller mass on his other leg, which turned out to be mast cell tumors. After a consultation with a board certified surgeon, it has been determined that he is not a good candidate for surgery since mast cell tumors will continue to come back, so he is now considered a hospice dog. HOWEVER, no one has told Vader!
Vader loves his life and enjoys living with his tiny sister Posey, an Old Dog Haven dog who has decided it is OK that he exists as long as he obeys her. He loves to play and enjoys going for car rides, short walks, and destroying dog toys. Vader loves the grandkids when they visit and enjoys all the attention he receives in his new home. He loves sleeping in bed with his new family and his foster dad gives him his pillow every morning when he leaves for work; we think that is the sweetest thing. He is such a happy boy who is so loved, and he is much more comfortable thanks to your support and donations to Old Dog Haven.
